The clarinet and flute will be highlighted in a free classical music concert this weekend presented jointly by Sunday Afternoon Live and the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle.
The concert takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday at the historic Raymond Theatre, 323 Third St. The show will feature two winners from the club’s 2017 Frances Walton Competition: Yasmina Spiegelberg, ho plays clarinet, and Hannah Leffler, flute.
Each year, the club selects four winners from among musicians ages 20-35. Two winners showcase their talents in Eastern Washington and two in Western Washington, offering free concerts plus school visits in communities that have limited access to live classical music. The Ladies Musical Club has sponsored these educational state tours since 1990.
Switzerland-born Spiegelberg, of Los Angeles, is working toward a graduate certificate in performance of music at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. She also has a master of music from Norwegian State Academy of Music, Oslo, Norway; a bachelor of music from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Netherlands; and a bachelor of arts in music from the Academy of Music of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Leffler, from Denton, Texas, is working toward a doctor of musical arts at the University of North Texas. She also has a master of music from the University of Northern Iowa and a bachelor of music from Oklahoma City University. She is one of the founding members of the electroacoustic duo WoodWired with bass clarinetist Cheyenne Cruz.
Sunday Afternoon Live’s 15th season opens the following weekend with the Quebe Sisters, a trio of award-winning fiddlers.
