Aberdeen High School senior to be featured by Seattle Opera

Story updated June 8 to include corrected recital time.

It’s going to be a big weekend for Aberdeen High School senior Emma Dorsch.

Saturday, June 12, the day after high school graduation, Emma Dorsch will be featured in the Seattle Opera’s Teen Vocal Studio final recital.

Teen Vocal Studio is Seattle Opera’s training program for young Pacific Northwest singers considering a future in music and opera.

“Due to the pandemic, the program was offered remotely during the opera’s 2020-21 season, and Dorsch, 17, auditioned into the program in the fall of 2020,” said dad Ian Dorsch, who is an applied voice instructor at Grays Harbor College and director of the Grays Harbor Opera Workshop. “She is the first singer from the Grays Harbor area to have done so.”

Since September 2020, members of the Teen Vocal Studio have met twice weekly via Zoom to study topics ranging from acting through singing to vocal anatomy to German diction and lieder. They participated in virtual master classes with professional classical singers from around the country, and mounted a virtual cabaret and art song recital.

The last few months of the program were focused on preparing opera scenes for Saturday’s final recital. These scenes were mostly recorded live and in person at the Opera Center in Seattle,

“It was the first time many of these young singers had met each other outside of Zoom,” said Ian Dorsch.

The recital starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, and can be accessed through the opera’s website, seattleopera.org.

After she graduates Friday, June 11, Dorsch will attend Grays Harbor College in the fall and plans to pursue a degree in vocal performance.
