Grant Edwards, right, takes a bite of his 100th birthday cake Saturday during a celebration at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Montesano, where Edwards is a lifetime member. Edwards was born May 3, 1919, in Great Falls, Montana. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 11, 1939. During his 20-year Navy career, Edwards was stationed in San Diego, where he was in Hospital Corps School, and in Bremerton aboard the USS Hendry attack transport. He has also lived in Aberdeen, Camp Pendleton, California, and in El Toro, California. He transferred to the Navy Reserve on Aug. 1, 1960.
