What is the purpose of the Gateway Center?

Visitor center or office for Greater Grays Harbor?

I attended the Nov. 3 presentation at the Rotary Log Pavilion regarding the proposed Gateway Center.

Previous to that date I had read the various articles in The Daily World as have most of my family and friends.

We all shared the same impression; that this building was to function as a welcoming center for visitors. It was to be a place where visitors and locals would be greeted and assisted by friendly, knowledgeable locals who could give information about Grays Harbor, the coast and the Olympic Peninsula.

There had been some mention that the top floor could be rented to Greater Grays Harbor Inc. to help cover the cost of maintaining the building.

I came away from the presentation with the impression that the project is specifically to build new office space for Greater Grays Harbor Inc. with perhaps a visitor center along with other options on the ground floor.

There are a few things that disturb me about this project.

First, I understand the desire and probably need for GGHI to have different space. I do not think it necessarily requires the public building them a new building. Second, The Daily World quoted Erik Larson as saying “ the future center isn’t going to be financed with local tax money.” Please clarify for me how the county is going to contribute $50,000 dollars or more to this project without using local public funds.

For all who may be interested, please go to www.graysharborgateway.com to review the project and register your opinion.
