Review Club minutes archived online with grant

Members of the Review Club of Aberdeen wish to express our respectful gratitude to Roy Vataja for his professional research and well-written account of our club’s 130-year history as published in the March 10 issue of The Daily World.

This year’s milestone birthday celebration, like our meetings throughout the pandemic, took place on Zoom. Members, some of whom have participated for 50 years or more, donned hats of various styles to toast five generations of members who have continuously read, shared and discussed literature on the Harbor.

In 2019, the Timberland Regional Library in cooperation with Review Club received a Washington Digital Heritage Grant from the Washington State Library to digitize the minutes and other records of the club. The result is that Review Club’s historic meeting minutes and related ephemera are now available to everyone on the Washington Rural Heritage site, www.washingtonruralheritage.org.

As in the past, Review Club supports organizations that promote girls and women, including “Sahar” and the “Central Asia Institute” that are devoted to educating females in Africa and Asia. Locally, the club supports the Friends of the Library groups in Aberdeen and Hoquiam. Review Club also coordinates with the Friends of the Aberdeen Timberland Library to offer the annual “Rainy Day Reading Reviews” in January and February of each year.

Notably, the estate of a former longtime Review Club member, Kathryn N. Sherk, is under writing the Aberdeen Library’s upcoming remodeling effort funded through the Sherk Bequest at the Grays Harbor Community Foundation.

Review Club of Aberdeen looks forward to maintaining its legacy of literature appreciation and community service into the future.
