HHS secretary should commit to fighting Alzheimer’s

Confirmation hearings

Soon the Senate will be holding hearings to determine who the next Secretary of Health and Human Services will be. President Trump has nominated Georgia Congressman Tom Price. As HHS Secretary, this cabinet position has a direct impact on how the Trump Administration prioritizes the fight to end Alzheimer’s.

I have long been active with the Alzheimer’s Association in an effort to fight this terrible disease. One in three seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia in the future. Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, costing an estimated $236 billion in 2016.

During the confirmation hearings, I want the Senate to ensure that Congressman Price will follow the recommendations of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease, which were mandated by Congress in 2010. I call upon Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell to ask, if confirmed, if Congressman Price will continue to promote our gains against Alzheimer’s.
