Vern Heikkila’s passion for paddling runs deep and in 2010 Vern built Ele Paio, a six-person, 44-foot “Tahitian-Hawaiian-Northwest Fusion” outrigger canoe. For years, Vern and his wife Janet have spent winters with friends in Hawaii paddling, racing and working on similar craft. Vern, Janet and friends can often be seen paddling Ele Paio on the bay and Elk River.
