A man armed with a gun robbed the Lincoln Street Grocery Monday morning. The gunman fled north, prompting a lockdown of nearby Lincoln Elementary School. Hoquiam Police responded in force and, with the aid of a department K9, flooded the area in search of the suspect, described as a white male, six feet tall with light colored eyes. An annual highlight of the Black and White Gala United Way fundraiser is the auctioning of a puppy. This year’s scene stealer was Chloe, a purebred American bulldog. The nine-week old pup was auctioned for more than $1,000 and came a selection of food, toys and more. Leaning down for a scratch is auctioneer Eric Nelson; pointing toward a bidder is fellow auctioneer Gary Morean.

What once was a popular vehicle access point to a gravel bar on the West Fork Humptulips River was blocked with boulders at its confluence with Forest Service Road 2203 Monday. Beyond the boulders is the old access road, which leads about 200 feet to the river.
