Robert James “Jim” Mason, a beloved husband, father, and pillar of the Grays Harbor community, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 94. Jim’s life was defined by hard work, dedication to his family, and a profound commitment to improving his community.
Born and raised in Forks, Washington, Jim graduated from high school in 1949. Soon after, he married his beloved wife, Helen James, and began his career in the logging industry. In 1958, seeking new opportunities, Jim moved to Seattle, where he earned a two-year accounting degree, a remarkable achievement that paved the way for him to pass the CPA exam, a rare feat for someone with only two years of college. He then joined the Internal Revenue Service, serving with distinction until his retirement at age 60.
In 1964, Jim and Helen relocated to Grays Harbor, where he embarked on one of his most enduring legacies: building a beautiful Mobile Home Park, Country Estates, on Clemons Road in Montesano. Working tirelessly after his office job, on weekends, and during vacations, Jim poured his heart into creating a thriving community. His family often marveled at his unrelenting work ethic, calling him the hardest-working man they ever knew.
Jim’s commitment extended beyond his family and business ventures. He was one of the dedicated businessmen who helped construct the iconic Log Pavilion at the entrance to Aberdeen, working closely under the guidance of designer and builder Bob Swedbloom. Jim took immense pride in this project, forging lasting friendships with fellow community leaders and leaving a lasting mark on the region. His wife, Helen, and their family were equally proud of his ability to balance his professional life with his passion for community service.
A devoted family man, Jim is survived by his son, Jim Mason, and his grandchildren: Sean Mason, Jill Jelovich, and Elisabeth Holt. His great-grandchildren: Barrett Mason, Aubree Mason, Connor Jelovich, Trey Jelovich, Kennedy Jelovich, Drew Jelovich, Dylan Holt, and Lily Holt—also carry on his legacy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Mason, and his daughter, Terri Mason.
Jim’s life was a testament to perseverance, love, and community spirit. His family remembers him not only for his achievements but also for his warm laughter and unwavering support. They invite friends and community members to join in a celebration of his life, with details to be announced at a later date. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time.
