Steven “Steve” Allen Topness, 73, a longstanding Ocean Shores resident, and former carpenter, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at his home in Ocean Shores, Washington.

Steve was born on Dec. 13, 1949, to parents Harold and Cecelia (Johansen) Topness in Bremerton, Washington. He was raised in Bremerton attending Holy Trinity Catholic church, and graduating from East High School in 1968. Although Steve received his diploma, he was not able to attend graduation — he was in boot camp. After completing his education, he joined the Navy, and served in Vietnam for some time. He worked on patrol boats, taking supplies inland from sea and transporting injured soldiers out. Steve spent 4 years with the military, and after his discharge, he moved to Spokane, Washington.

He began taking classes at Central Washington University for carpentry. In the late 1970s, he met and married Renee, in Ellensburg, Washington. Steve became a carpenter and joined the union. He spent roughly 10 years or so in Spokane, before moving to Florida, where he built houses and condominiums, then to Arizona, working as a building inspector and foreman. He then moved back home to Bremerton, Washington, working at Trident and Submarine Base, and helping to care for his mother. He retired in 2001, after building his home in Ocean Shores, Washington.

Steve enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. His favorite pastimes were being with family. He always looked forward to July 4th visits from the cousins in Spokane. Between remodeling his siblings’ homes, Sunday dinners at mom’s house, and spending time with his nieces and nephews. He always had the kids, teaching them how to cook and showing them a day full of activities.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Cecilia Topness.

Steve is survived by his brothers: Joe (Jeanie) Topness, of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Ronald (Catherine) Topness of the Philippines; sisters: Cecilia (Bob) Johnson, of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Mary Topness, of Seattle, Washington; nieces: Tracie Topness, Heather and Amanda McIntyre, Suzanne Johnson, and Alicia (Josh) Sonnenfeld; nephews: Hayden McIntyre, Kyle and Evan Topness; and great-niece and nephew, Mila and Coen Topness.
