Stars shine, records fall at Grays Harbor All-County Championships

Aberdeen boys, Montesano girls teams place first; Hoquiam’s Straka breaks meet record

The talents of local prep track and field stars were on full display at the Ray Ryan Memorial Gray Harbor All-County Championship meet on Thursday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

With notable performances from many a student-athlete on Thursday, it was arguably Hoquiam thrower Tyara Straka’s display of prowess in the shot put that stood above the rest.

The state-champion senior, who entered the meet with the top shot put throw in the state, raised the bar on Thursday.

Straka’s heave of 45 feet even set a new personal best and broke the meet record of 44-10 set by former Montesano great and current Oregon State Beaver Jordan Spradlin in 2016.

Straka also took first in the girls discus throw with a toss of 122-06, which would qualify as the fifth best throw in the state this season, but is over a foot short of her season-best 123-07 mark, which is currently third in the entire state.

Aberdeen’s boys scored the most points of any team at the meet with 226, cruising to a team victory over North Beach (105) and Ocosta (98), which placed second and third, respectively.
