Elma’s Grant Vessey drove in Eastin Wright with the game-winning run in extra innings to defeat Aberdeen 13-12 on Saturday in Elma.

Tied at 12 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Wright reached base on a one-out error and advanced to second when Elma’s JT Tiffany was hit by a Baylor Ainsworth pitch.

Vessey stepped to the plate and lined Ainsworth’s 1-0 pitch to left field, scoring Wright and giving Elma the 13-12 walk-off victory.

Both offenses were on display as the two teams combined for 25 hits in the contest and four half-inning where at least three runs were scored.

The Eagles (2-5 overall) scored at least one run in seven of eight innings but trailed 8-4 after the first three innings before outscoring Aberdeen (2-3) 7-0 in the fourth through sixth inning.

In Elma’s four-run sixth, an error on a ground ball hit by Ethan Camus allowed Gibson Cain and Jack Alexander — both aboard with singles — to score, giving Elma a 9-8 lead.

Elma scored two more runs in the inning on a passed ball followed by a dropped third strike to take an 11-8 lead into the top of the seventh.

But the Bobcats responded in spectacular fashion.

Aberdeen loaded the bases on a Kenny Dawson single, a Marcus Hale walk and Kale Goings single. Ainsworth drove home a run on a fielder’s choice ground out to Elma pitcher Gibson Cain. Aberdeen infielder Kyler Miller followed with a two-run single to pull the Bobcats to within a run at 11-10. Luca Pisani then doubled to left, scoring Goings and Miller to complete the Aberdeen rally and give the Bobcats a 12-11 lead.

Cain was able to get Hunter Eisele and Trevon Nichols to fly out to end the threat without any further damage.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cain singled with one out and later advanced to third. On a 1-0 count to Camus, Cain scurried home on a wild pitch from Aberdeen reliever Mason Sorensen to tie the game at 12-12.

Camus then sent a ground ball to Eisele at shortstop, who cut down Alexander advancing to third for the second out.

Sorensen got out of the inning by getting sanders to ground out to Nichols at third, sending the game to extra innings.

Cain pitched a 1-2-3 top of the eighth to set up the Eagles offense for the walk-off win in the bottom half of the inning.

“Our guys had a much better approach today at the plate. Effort in the outfield was awesome with diving bodies trying to make plays. We also limited our errors,” Elma head coach Travis Vessey said. “Aberdeen is a good team and they are going to shock some teams in their league. Really came down to who had the hammer in this game and today we had it.”

The top half of Elma’s lineup did most of the damage. Tiffany (3-4, 2B, 3B, 3R), Vessey (2-3, 2R, 4RBI), Blake Corr (2-4, R, RBI) and Cain (2-4, 2R) went a combined 9-for-15 with eight runs scored.

Cain picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief of starter Carter Studer, who allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

Aberdeen was led by Miller (3-5, 2R, 2RBI), Pisani (2-4, 2B, 3RBI), Nichols (2-5, R) and Goings (2-3, 3R, RBI) with Hale (1-3, 2B, 2R, RBI) and Eisele (1-5, 3B, R) knocking extra-base hits.

Aberdeen used four pitchers in the game. Pisani started, allowing six runs — five earned — on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Ainsworth took the loss, allowing the unearned run in the eighth on one hit and a strikeout.

Aberdeen hosts Tumwater at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Elma takes on Hoquiam in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
