After nearly a month since their last game, the Raymond Seagulls returned to the court on Friday with a 55-44 victory over Winlock at Winlock High School.

Raymond (7-1 overall, 4-0 2B Pacific) played in its first game in 27 days and had just two practices leading up to Friday as COVID measures caused the postponement of multiple Seagulls games over the past month.

“After opponents’ COVID issues and then our own it was nice to finally compete in a game,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “It was expected for us to not be very sharp, but I thought our kids really showed resilience and toughness fighting through our struggles to get the win.”

Senior guard Kyra Gardner led the way with 30 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals for Raymond.

Freshman Karsyn Freeman added 12 points for Raymond, which took a 21-12 lead after the first quarter but saw that lead trimmed to 30-25 by halftime.

Winlock standout Addison Hall had 21 points in the game, 15 of those in the first half to keep Cardinals (8-6) within striking distance.

“We did a much better job in the second half as a team identifying where she was without the ball to limit her chances and only allowed her six points in the second half,” Koski said.

Izzy Silvernail came off the bench to record three assists and three steals in a performance Koski said “gave us a good spark,” and Grace Busenius led Raymond with 10 rebounds in the victory.

“We are hoping like heck we get to continue to play our scheduled games and looking forward to getting our canceled games rescheduled,” Koski said.

Raymond is scheduled to face rival South Bend at 6 p.m. Monday at South Bend High School.

Montesano 60, Eatonville 22

Montesano won its second straight league contest with a 60-22 victory over Eatonville on Friday in Montesano.

Montesano (9-1, 2-0 1A Evergreen) used its defense to hold Eatonville (0-6, 0-2) to just 11 points in each half while forcing 31 turnovers in the contest.

The Bulldogs were up 6-5 in the first quarter when their defensive pressure began to produce turnovers that Monte quickly turned into a six point lead.

In the second quarter, Monte’s defense continued to help its offense as more Cruisers turnovers led to a double-digit Montesano lead.

“Defensively, we played very well and we just made them uncomfortable,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said.

Mikayla Stanfield led Montesano with a breakout game, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds.

“She did a great job finding the basket and her aggressiveness created opportunities for others,” Mansfield said of the sophomore guard.

Paige Lisherness finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals while Vanna Prom had 10 points and five deflections for the Bulldogs.

Montesano hit 24-of-56 (43%) from the field and outrebounded Eatonville 39-22.

Monte hosts Hoquiam at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Elma 47, Hoquiam 44

In a close, low-scoring game it was the Elma Eagles that made the plays down the stretch to pick up a critical 47-44 victory over Hoquiam in a 1A Evergreen League matchup on Friday in Elma.

Tied at the half and with the Eagles nursing a 29-27 lead at the end of the third quarter, Elma extended its lead to nine midway through the fourth quarter and hit free throws in the game’s waning minutes to pick up the victory.

“Without that run, we don’t win,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said of his team’s fourth-quarter run. “Our kids are battling every night. We are pushing them each night to do things fundamentally sound and correct.”

Traden Carter and Canon Seaberg led Elma with 10 points apiece, with Carter hitting 6-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter and Seaberg making a pair from the charity stripe in the end to secure the win.

Elma shot 15-of-51 (29%) from the field and went 17-for-22 from the free-throw line in the game.

Hoquiam, which was led by Michael Lorton Watkins’ 15 points, shot 11-for-57 (19%) from the field and 19-for-29 (66%) from the free-throw line in the defensive-minded contest.

“I am extremely proud they found a way to get it done,” Ferrier said. “It wasn’t pretty but we will take it.”

Hoquiam faces North Beach at 3 p.m. Saturday in Ocean Shores.

Elma’s next game is scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Tenino.

Eatonville 71, Montesano 32

Montesano fell behind in the first half and never recovered in a 71-32 loss to Eatonville on Friday at Eatonville High School.

Montesano (1-10, 0-3 1A Evergreen) trailed 11-9 as an Eatonville buzzer-beater closed out the first quarter and the Bulldogs fell into a hole they’d never climb out of as the Cruisers (6-1, 2-0) outscored Monte 26-5 in the second period.

“We need to continue to work and shoot better and find a way to score,” Montesano head coach Doug Farmer said.

Eatonville’s Reilly Mcilraith led all scorers with 28 points as the Cruisers went 28-of-49 (57%) from the field, including 9-of-19 (47%) from beyond the arc, and hit 10-of-20 (50%) free throws.

Montesano was led by Soren Cobb’s nine points.

The Bulldogs shot 13-of-35 (37%) from the field, including 1-of-11 (9%) from the 3-point line.

Montesano made 5-of-9 (56%) of its free throws.

The Bulldogs will host Seton Catholic at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Forks 63, North Beach 53

North Beach’s losing streak continued after falling to Forks 63-53 on Thursday in Ocean Shores.

North Beach (4-6, 1-6 2B Pacific) stayed close with Forks (6-6, 5-2), cutting the Spartans lead to four points with four minutes left in the game.

But the Spartans, which were bolstered the entire game by their fast-break offense, held off the Hyaks comeback attempt to hand North Beach its fourth straight loss.

“I think the difference in the game was our inability to get back on defense and stop their fast break,” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “I was proud of how the kids kept competing.”

Sam Teague and Tre’Vaughn Greene each had 16 points to lead North Beach. Greene also had 12 rebounds and four blocks in the game.

Josh Bighead added 15 points and led North Beach with seven assists.

North Beach hosts Hoquiam at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
