Aberdeen 4, W.F. West 2

Aberdeen is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the 2A Evergreen Conference after downing W.F. West 4-2 on Thursday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (5-0) used the same winning formula they had through five matches this season: Sweeping the singles matches and picking up a doubles win to emerge victorious.

Aberdeen singles players Sophie Knutson, Kensie Ervin and Madi Ritter each won their singles matches to remain undefeated on the season, but it wasn’t easy, particulary for Knutson.

The junior standout and state-qualifier last season had her hands full against the defensive-minded play of W.F. West’s top singles player Elizabeth Mittge.

Mittge won the first set 7-6 on a 7-5 tiebreaker in breezy conditions.

“Mittge was like a brick wall, not letting much get by her. Sophie had to play especially clean and pick her opportunities to be aggressive,” Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kohlmeier said. “The first half of the match was especially windy, so the fact that each girl had so few errors is especially impressive. Their points went longer than some neighboring court’s complete games.”

Knutson was able to lock in over the final two sets, winning each by identical 6-3 scores to claim the victory in the 3.5-hour long match.

“(Knutson) was the first match on and the last one off. Kudos to both players who were very evenly matched,” Kohlmeier said. “All credit goes to Sophine for digging out after that close first set. She kept her feet moving, and never looked tired. She didn’t let the long, grueling points get to her and kept a clear head. In matches like this, so many players can get frustrated and go for too much. Sophie just always gets to every ball. I’ve never seen anything like it. If her opponent was a brick wall, she was a stubborn barricade.”

While Knutson and Mittge were engaged in their epic match, Ervin and Ritter were busy dispatching of their opponents.

Ervin beat Isabella Casimiro 6-4, 6-1 while Ritter got past Maddie Bradley 6-2, 6-2.

“Ervin won with her feet. That girl never stops moving and always makes the little adjustments that are necessary on big points. She keeps a cool head and plays smart, tactical tennis even when her opponents try to put on the pressure,” Kohlmeier said. “Ritter played smart, quick points and forced her opponent to stay on the defensive from start to finish.”

The Aberdeen doubles combo of Hadley Durr/Sawyer Shoemaker lost a long, hard-fought matchup to Aubrey Prigmore and Eliana Alves, losing in a third-set tiebreaker 9-7, while the Bobcats’ Hailey Fuquay and Leticia Alvarenga were swept 6-0, 6-0 to trim the Bobcats’ lead to 3-2.

The match came down to the No. 3 doubles competiton, where the newly paired duo of Cyan Sullivan and Iza Frye gave Aberdeen the team victory by defeating the Bearcats’ Mia Ceslic/Tinsley Brown 7-5, 2-6 and 6-4.

“Both girls showed great promise,” Kohlmeier said. “The made great adjustments during a long three-set match and played clean at the end to take the third set.”

With the win, Aberdeen sits alone in first place in the 2A EvCo and is the only unbeaten team remaining in the league.

“As expected, this match up with the Bearcats was going to be competitive,” Kohlmeier said. “I am so proud of how we handled the pressure put on us by a very talented Bearcat team.”

Aberdeen is on Spring Break and resumes play on April 15 at Tumwater High School.

BOYS PREP SOCCER

Hoquiam 2, Tenino 0

Hoquiam scored a goal in each half en route to a key 2-0 victory over Tenino on Thursday at Hoquiam High School.

The Grizzlies (3-6 overall, 3-5 1A Evergreen) took an early lead when junior midfielder J.B. Fabian scored on an assist from sophomore defender Oscar Flores just seven minutes into the game.

Hoquiam doubled its lead over the Beavers (2-5, 2-5) in the second half when senior Dylan Avila converted a corner kick from junior forward Michael Garcia into a goal in the 54th minute.

Hoquiam had it’s chances to extend the lead, evidenced by 23 total shots – 17 on goal – in the game to just four for the Beavers.

But the Tenino goal keeper made several saves to keep the score at 2-0.

“Amazing performance tonight from start to finish. We looked composed in possession, relaxed in defense, battled for everything and had pressure on them from start to finish,” Hoquiam head coach Daniel Langer said. “I was incredibly impressed with Dylan Avila in the midfield tonight. J.B. Fabian ran the show alongside him and our entire defensive line stepped up and looked solid throughout. Great win tonight.”

Hoquiam sits in sixth place in the 1A Evergreen League with nine points, three better than Tenino, and will be back in action against Montesano at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 in Montesano.

GIRLS PREP GOLF

Montesano 212, Seton Catholic 262

Montesano defeated Seton Catholic 212-262 on Tuesday at the Tri Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield.

Monte was led by Makenzie Hart, who earned Medalist of the Match honors by shooting a nine-hole rouud of 51 highlighted by a par on the part-4 4th hole.

Rory Gourdin (52), Lucy Scott (53) and Makena Blancas (56) rounded out the Bulldogs’ total team score.

“Another solid outing for our girls. This was easily our biggest challenge yet as Tri Mountain was in great shape. We have not had much of an opportunity to practice on firm and fast greens, which Tri Mountain certainly provided,” Montesano head coach Tyler Grajek said. “Although our short game might’ve not been at our best, we were great off the tee and our irons/wedges into greens were dialed in. Our girls once again demonstrated resilience, composure and grit throughout the challenging round. Most girls improved on their previous match scores and we still have lots of time to round out our games. Very proud of their efforts.”

Montesano (212): Makenzie Hart 51, Rory Gourdin 52, Lucy Scott 53, Makena Blancas 56.

Seton Catholic (262): Taryn Pfeifer 62, Claire McCart 65, Rylue Haczynski 66, Allie Wood 69.
