Montesano 12, Elma 7

In sharp contrast to the low-scoring affair the two teams played earlier in the season, the rematch between Montesano and Elma was a slug-fest that saw the Bulldogs come out on top 12-7 on Wednesday in Montesano.

The matchup featured two of the best teams in Washington as the Eagles (13-1, 5-1 Evergreen 1A) came into Wednesday’s action ranked third with Montesano (9-3, 4-1) ranked No. 12 in the state according to maxpreps.com.

The Bulldogs started off strong with two runs in the opening frame and added to their lead in the second inning with seven more runs.

Monte batted around in a second inning that was highlighted by Jessica Stanfield’s three-run home run to put Montesano up 9-1.

Elma had some uncharacteristic defensive miscues that contributed to the big inning, as all four of the Eagles’ errors came in the second frame.

“We just told them that you have to be ready and to drive it when your pitch comes,” Montesano head coach Pat Pace said. “We tried to be a little more patient at the plate than the last time we played, but just because you put up seven runs doesn’t mean the game is over with Elma.”

The Eagles never fully recovered from Monte’s second inning, but Elma head coach Roger Elliot said his team showed a lot of fight over the next five innings.

“We had a really bad inning in that second inning. There were too many errors, too many passed balls along with a couple of walks and hits,” he said. “I thought we hit the ball fine, we just didn’t get that clutch two-out hit. They fought back and didn’t lay down.”

Elma responded in the top of the third inning by scoring four runs of its own to make it a 9-5 ballgame.

Elma starter Destry Dineen had a rough go of it in the circle but made up for it with a two-run double to cap a third-inning rally.

With their lead trimmed, Monte put together one more rally by adding three more runs to its total in the bottom of the third. Lindsay Pace’s two-run home run to center field highlighted Monte’s last offensive outburst of the game and put the Bulldogs up 12-5 at the time.

Montesano’s Emma Jensen, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the contest, said the team had a better plate approach than it did the last time it faced Elma.

“You have to look for a first-pitch strike and you can’t let having strikes on you mess with your mindset,” she said. “You can’t let the pitcher get into your head because that’s what our struggle was last game. It wasn’t them, it was us.”

Pace pitched all seven innings for the Bulldogs and limited the Eagles to three runs outside of Elma’s third-inning rally.

She said she kept hitters off balance by working off of her fastball and looked to take control of the inside corner of the plate early in the count.

“I was trying to pitch them inside to see if they could get their hands through the zone fast enough and I was mixing speeds on them toward the end,” she said.

Elma won’t have a lot of time to dwell on its first loss of the season as the Eagles host Hoquiam at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Montesano will also be back in action on Thursday and will face Tenino on the road at 4:30 p.m. Jensen said the team is in a good head space to finish strong with three league games left on the schedule.

“If we are mentally stable and we have pitching, defense and offense, we can literally do anything,” she said.

Forks 2, Montesano 0

Injuries and a lack of offense was too much to overcome in Montesano’s 2-0 loss to Forks on Wednesday at Jack Rottle Field.

Montesano (7-7, 7-3 Evergreen 1A) gave up a goal in the eighth minute to Forks’ Hugo Sandoval to put the Bulldogs down 1-0 going into halftime.

Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said he planned to generate more chances in the second half until injuries to his forwards short circuited the offense.

“As soon as a couple of players went down, that kind of limited our attack because of our forwards that were hurt,” he said. “The game plan was to stay behind the ball and try to counter attack and press their defense. Forks did a good job of possessing the ball and going forward.”

Still trailing by a goal, Montesano got its best chance at tying the game when Veli Ambrocio had a one-on-one opportunity against the Spartans’ goalkeeper. But goalie Gabriel Terrones came out to challenge the shot and another Forks defender cleared the bouncing ball off the goal line to thwart the Bulldogs scoring opportunity.

The Spartans (9-3, 8-1) added an insurance goal in the 38th minute from Tony Hernandez-Flores. With the win, league-leading Forks is now up two games in the loss column on second-place Elma with three games to go.

Montesano will try to hold on to third place in the standings with a 4:30 p.m. match at Hoquiam on Friday.

Elma 9, Raymond-South Bend 0

Elma scored early and often in a 9-0 win over Raymond-South Bend in Elma on Wednesday.

Rene Durand and Manny Hernandez both provided hat tricks in a match where Elma (8-5-1, 7-3 Evergreen 1A) held a 6-0 lead heading into halftime.

Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said it was good to see Durand perform well once he was moved to forward after playing on the backline all season.

“We were able to play everybody and we took as many as we could with us. We took the opportunity to play Rene high, so it was fun for him to get some goal-scoring chances,” he said.

With the loss Raymond-South Bend falls to 3-8 overall and 1-8 in league play.

RSB will take on Forks on the road at 6 p.m. on Friday in its next match.

Elma will host Ilwaco on Friday at 7 p.m.
