District 2A Tournament

CHEHALIS — Aberdeen’s Brendan King earned a state berth by tying for third place in the District IV Class 2A Tournament that concluded Wednesday at the Riverside Golf Course.

With a closing 77, King finished with a 36-hole total of 156. Ridgefield’s Cade Bringhurst won the tournament with a 148.

King advances to state competition next May in the Tri-Cities area.

Competing in steady rain, King fired an excellent 37 on the front nine Wednesday. He stumbled a bit on the back nine, but rebounded with two consecutive birdies.

“Brendan played one of the best rounds of his career,” Aberdeen coach Dan Sundstrom said. “I think he was happy to see the weather report. He enjoys playing in the rain, but he had to fight a pretty stiff wind on the back nine.”

Despite an eight-stroke improvement from Tuesday’s opening round, Aberdeen’s Jaxson Larson failed to advance with a 93-85 — 178 total. He was one stroke away from earning a state alternate’s berth.

Columbia River won the district team title.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ocosta match called

WESTPORT — Wednesday’s Napavine at Ocosta Central 2B League contest at Griffin Field was called in mid-match due to inclement weather.

Contested in heavy rain and blustery wind, the match was scoreless when officials called a halt during stoppage time in the first half, citing unsafe field conditions.

Ocosta coach Mike King, whose team would have had the wind at its back in the second half, was unhappy with the decision.

“We play games every year under these conditions,” King said. “This is Grays Harbor soccer at its finest.”

The match may not be rescheduled unless it has playoff implications.

Ocosta travels to Winlock on Monday.
