Unbeaten Bobcats swamp Tumwater

Aberdeen rolls to a 127-55 win over Tumwater on Wednesday

Even without additional state berths to add to an already impressive early season portfolio, this was another successful day at the pool for Aberdeen’s swimmers.

Capturing 11 of 12 events, the unbeaten Bobcats swamped Tumwater, 127-55, in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls swim meet Wednesday at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.

This was a rare meet in which the Bobcats, who have supplemented veterans of last year’s district championship team with a cadre of talented freshmen, failed to attain any new state-qualifying times. Nor did any school records fall Wednesday.

Aberdeen coach Jan Simons used some of her top swimmers in unfamiliar events and said the team is pointing for Saturday’s Mukilteo Invitational at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. The Class 2A Bobcats will be facing primarily 3A and 4A opposition in that meet.

“They were pretty solid in their swims, but we need to raise that (level), particularly our returning state swimmers,” Simons said. “I haven’t let up on any training. I’m hoping that they’ll get those state times soon.”

To say the Bobcats (2-0, 5-0) dominated the meet, however, would be an understatement. They won every swimming event (Tumwater’s Claire Barnard captured the diving) and finished one-two in seven races.

Senior Emily May and freshman Annika Eisele were double individual winners.

May pulled away from teammate Kayleia Sias in the final 100 meters to take the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 2:09.99. She later blew away the opposition in the 500 free, finishing some 40 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

With a strong final 20 yards, Eisele outdueled teammate Karli Heikkila in the 50 free and finished about a body length ahead of AHS senior Mari Rabung in the 100 breaststroke.

Eisele and May were also members of a victorious relay team.

Heikkila also established a season best with a winning 59.49 clocking in the 100 free.

Freshmen Sias and Karime Baltazar were decisive victors in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley, respectively.

Junior Mackayla Waltee was Aberdeen’s other individual winner, in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 1:12.88 also represented a season PR.

Simons cited Katie Lewis, Annetthe Orona, Camyrn Cook, Rylee Watson and Patricia Bates for strong performances and Katie Cournoyer and Trudy Butcher for earning district berths in diving. The Aberdeen coach also thanked her assistants and meet personnel.

Lifeguards at the YMCA were summoned when Tumwater’s Delaney Boe suffered an apparent asthma attack in the midst of the 100-yard butterfly. Boe received treatment at poolside and returned to compete in the concluding 400 free relay.
