Gulls 30, Chinooks 22

RAYMOND — Using its defense to stay afloat until its offense kicked into gear, Raymond earned a district berth by downing Kalama in a District IV play-in game Tuesday.

The Gulls (8-13) advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and will face Toledo at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Chehalis.

Raymond scoring leader Makenna Williams drew two fouls in the opening 75 seconds and sat out the remainder of the first half.

The Gulls mustered just one field goal in the half, but trailed only 8-6 at intermission.

Williams and Isabel Mora combined for 22 of their team’s 24 points in the second half while Raymond’s defense continued to stymie Kalama. The Chinooks hit only 7-of-70 field-goal attempts in a contest that included 63 turnovers.

“It was just a matter of weathering the storm and staying close,” Raymond coach Jason Koski said. “It was ugly, but our team battled.”

Williams finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Mora had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Ana Silva paced the Gulls in rebounding with eight.

Koski cited the reserve play of Madeline Silvernail, a freshman who played junior varsity ball during the regular season.

NASELLE — A season that should give North River’s boys a lot to build on going forward came to a disappointing end on Tuesday night when the Mustangs fell to Naselle in a District IV Class 1B contest Tuesday.

The loss eliminates North River from the postseason after the team qualified for districts for the first time in 10 years.

Mustangs head coach Sean Pierson said the team’s usual high-pressure defensive strategy wasn’t effective against a team with Naselle’s quickness.

“We lived and died off the press and we weren’t able to turn them over,” he said. “We tired and they started looking faster than us but I’m still proud of these kids.”

Forrest Carbaugh scored seven points for the Mustangs.

Pierson said he is encouraged by the steps his team took this season and expects his young team to come back stronger next season.
