Tuesday Prep Roundup: Monte clinches league title in soccer

Montesano beats Tenino 1-0 to clinch league soccer title

GIRLS SOCCER

Bulldogs 1, Beavers 0

TENINO — Montesano clinched the top-seeded district berth in the Evergreen 1A League by edging Tenino on Tuesday at Tenino.

With the victory, the Bulldogs (6-0, 11-1-1) assured themselves of no worse than a share of the league championship. Even if they wind up deadlocked with runner-up Elma, they would earn the top seed by virtue of their season sweep of the Eagles.

This was Montesano’s second one-goal victory over Tenino, but the Bulldogs controlled this match more than the score indicated. They outshot the Beavers, 8-1, in the first half and the second-half totals were similar.

“We pinned them back the whole game,” Monte coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We just couldn’t (make) quality passes inside the 18-yard box. They didn’t really have any good chances at our goal. Very seldom did they cross midfield.”

Samantha Stanfield and Brooke Streeter put together a combination play for Montesano’s only goal. Taking a pass from Streeter, Stanfield converted about a 12-yard shot in the 55th minute.

Although not called upon to make many saves, Bulldog goalkeeper Haylee Perkinson drew Sanchez’s praise for directing the defense.

The Bulldogs entertain Hoquiam on Thursday.

Bobcats 3, Bearcats 2

CHEHALIS — Doing all of its scoring on outside shots in the first half, Aberdeen continued its late-season surge with a victory at Chehalis on Tuesday.

The Bobcats countered an early Chehalis goal when Adrianna Vasquez chipped in a shot from about 20 yards out in the 14th minute. Anna Foss gave Aberdeen (3-5, 4-7-2) a permanent lead about four minutes later by hitting another 20-yard shot.

Abbie Bradt knocked in a 25-yard rocket with four minutes remaining in the first half to make it 3-1. The insurance goal proved important when Chehalis scored in the 45th minute.

Controlling possession in the second half, the Bearcats threatened repeatedly in the late going. Aberdeen’s defense, however, broke up a couple of late Chehalis scoring chances to maintain the advantage.

“Except for some problems with ball-control in the second half, we played a good game on an unfamiliar (grass) surface and got a crucial win on the road,” Bobcat coach Larry Fleming said.

Midfielders Foss and Brooklyn Lecomte and defender Amiah Leach were cited for solid outings.

Chehalis took the JV game, 6-1. Nancy Tobar scored the lone AHS goal, with Savannah Hendricks noted for fine play.

The Bobcats host Tumwater on Thursday.

Grizzlies 9, Spartans 0

With nine players scoring one goal apiece, Hoquiam beat short-handed Forks in an eight-on-eight match Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

The Grizzlies (2-3, 4-8-1) rotated their personnel throughout. Incredibly, no Grizzly scored multiple goals.

“We were able to dominate possession and did a great job working the ball across the field,” HHS coach Drew Grannemann said.

Hoquiam’s Maya Jump opened the scoring in the 10th minute by hitting a 25-yard shot off a Taylor Strom assist. Strom then fed Sadie Carlyle for a goal one minute later.

Tauni Hilliard, Ainsley Estes, Amelia Moir, Jade Cox and Abbi Spradlin also scored in the first half for the Grizzlies. Jordan Cox and Strom tallied in the second half.

Spradlin also had two assists, with Jump, Carlyle and Baylie Palmer adding one assist each.

The Grizzlies visit Hoquiam on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

Vikings win in five

SOUTH BEND — Boosted by tough defense, Willapa Valley rallied for a 16-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12 win over rival South Bend in a Pacific 2B League contest Tuesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Vikings (3-3, 7-5) led throughout the final set and withstood a late South Bend comeback.

Katie Adkins and Katelyn McGough were praised by Valley coach Lori Snodgrass for serving and defense. Adkins brought up nine digs.

“As a team, we moved really well tonight and covered the floor,” Snodgrass said. “We refused to let the ball hit the floor.”

Emilee Layman topped Viking hitters with eight kills and six blocks. Hannah Cook and Olivia Betrozoff had six kills each for Willapa Valley.

South Bend coach Tricia Needham was also very happy with her team’s defense.

“Our defense was incredible tonight,” Needham said. “While the loss is disappointing, I am proud of the way the girls stayed united throughout the match.”

Jessica Sanchez put down 16 kills for the Indians (1-4, 3-8). Hannah Byington dished out 15 assists, while Livvie Ogilvie was cited for serving.

Willapa Valley also won the JV match, 25-10, 21-25, 15-4.

On Thursday, Willapa Valley hosts Ocosta and South Bend makes the short trip to Raymond.

Wildcats in three

WESTPORT — Well-balanced Ocosta remained unbeaten in Pacific 2B League play by trouncing Chief Leschi, 25-10, 25-18, 25-18, on Tuesday at Westport.

“We played all of our seniors and the seniors played very well,” Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus said.

Erika Snider served six aces and delivered seven kills, while Alivia Marsh served 13 points (including five aces).

Caylee Litterer served four aces and was also cited for passing. Serena Hermon was also praised for passing, while Shaleah Sinnett dished out six assists.

The Wildcat JV also prevailed, 25-10, 25-7.

Ocosta (5-0, 10-1) journeys to Willapa Valley on Thursday.

Grizzlies win in three

Hoquiam dominated the net in a 25-13, 25-14, 25-16 rout of Forks in Evergreen 1A League play Tuesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Kamimi Papp delivered a team-high nine kills, with Mercedes Pinnell and Elyse Goulet cited for blocking. Kacey Pelan distributed 16 assists, while Karlie Krohn had 15 digs and Miera O’Dell went 13-of-13 from the service line.

“We played really tough at the net. We didn’t play soft at all,” Grizzly coach Heather Bozich said. “And our passing was great tonight as well.”

Forks won both the JV and C squad matches in two sets.

The Grizzlies (3-2, 6-6) travel to Montesano on Thursday.

Bulldogs in three

TENINO — Montesano rode a strong start to a 25-5, 25-18, 25-18 rout of Tenino in an Evergreen 1A League contest Tuesday at Tenino.

“It was a good night and we got to try some stuff we weren’t able to try earlier on (in the season),” Monte coach Renee Volz said.

She cited Lindsay Pace and McKenna Miller for hitting, Hannah Hatcher for setting and defense and Emma Jensen for serving.

The Bulldogs also took the JV match in two sets.

Now 4-2 in league and 7-5 overall, Montesano hosts Hoquiam on Thursday.

Bobcats fall in three

Chehalis stayed on the attack for most of the way in topping Aberdeen, 25-16, 25-21, 25-13, in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Tuesday at Sam Benn Gym.

The Bobcats came from behind to forge a 21-21 deadlock in the second set. Chehalis, however, won the final four points of the set and maintained the momentum into the third stanza.

“The first two games were some of the strongest volleyball we’ve played all season,” Aberdeen coach Doug Basler contended. “We were scrappy and played some of our best defense. The only thing we weren’t doing tonight was blocking.”

Bobcat libero Tamara Corona enjoyed an excellent all-around match, putting all nine of her serves into play and also earning Basler’s praise for passing and defense. Kennedy Pruett paced Aberdeen hitters with seven kills.

Chehalis took the JV and C squad matches in two sets apiece.

The Bobcats (1-6, 2-10) visit reigning state champion Tumwater on Thursday.

Elks win in three

OAKVILLE — Lake Quinault used a balanced attack to top Oakville, 25-12, 25-21, 25-19, in a Coastal 1B League contest Tuesday at Oakville.

Elk coach Sue Kalama said her team controlled the net in an all-around fine performance.

“Everybody contributed,” Kalama said. “It was a pretty good match.”

The Elks (6-0, 9-1) visit Taholah on Thursday.

Gulls lose in three

LACEY — Northwest Christian downed Raymond in three sets in a Pacific 2B League contest Tuesday at Lacey. Set scores were unavailable.

Karlee Freeman had 10 kills and Maddi Murray six for the Gulls (3-2, 8-3). But Raymond’s normally productive offense struggled for most of the contest.

“We sent over way too many free balls,” Gull coach Bob Swogger said. “That’s usually because you struggle in passing, which we did.”

The Gulls host rival South Bend on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF

District 2A Tourney

CHEHALIS — Aberdeen’s Brendan King is tied for fifth after the opening round of the District IV Class 2A Tournament that concluded Tuesday at Riverside Golf Course.

King carded a 79, three strokes behind the leader, Ridgefield’s Cade Bringhurst.

“Overall, he was happy with his round, except for the four or five putts that burned the edge of the cup,” Aberdeen coach Dan Sundstrom.

King is in good position to land one of the 18 berths at the state tournament that will be contested next spring.

Jaxson Larson was the only other Bobcat to survive the 18-hole cut. He shot an opening-round 93.

Aberdeen’s George White barely missed with a 95. Nolan King shot 101, Evan Waara 103 and Gavin Timmons 142.

The opening six holes were played in heavy rain and wind, but conditions cleared as the day progressed.

The final round is scheduled for Wednesday.
