PREP SOCCER

Hoquiam 1, Elma 0 (4-2 in shootout)

A key save in a shootout helped give the Hoquiam Grizzlies a 1-0 victory with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks.

Hoquiam keeper Jonny Smith came up with a pivotal play when he stopped the penalty kick attempt of Aiden Sayers-Hartman in the shootout to give the Grizzlies the 1-0 win.

Smith said he tried not to over think on where the shot was going and trust his instincts.

“I just tried to keep my cool and think about winning for my teammates. I tried to stay calm and follow my heart,” he said. “Sometimes you watch their body, but guys can mix it up so you just have to follow your gut.”

The save combined with an early miss off the crossbar from Elma opened the door for Hoquiam’s Dylan Baker to clinch the victory with a shot that beat Eagles keeper AJ Hernandez low and to his left.

The second half and much of overtime featured a lot of play in the midfield as neither team got many high-quality opportunities to score inside the box.

The Grizzlies found themselves unable to capitalize on chances before the end of regulation as well. Edgar Estrada took aim at the far side of the net, but saw his shot sail just wide of the post in the 77th minute from approximately 10-yards out.

Hoquiam head coach Fidel Sanchez said he was disappointed his team didn’t generate more scoring chances down the stretch.

“We weren’t getting the good, high-quality chances inside the 18-yard box and that’s really frustrating for us,” he said. “They didn’t have a shot that was really dangerous. We controlled the game, but I hate the fact that you could lose the game on a counter attack.”

Elma generated more of an attack in the second overtime period, threatening with a corner kick and free kick from five yards outside the box.

Smith and the Hoquiam back line held strong, however, and forced the game to penalty kicks after holding off the Eagles’ threat.

Sanchez said he had to juggle the lineup a bit with forward Connor Darras unavailable to play and said one fullback could see some more playing time after his performance on Tuesday.

“We had to shuffle some people around. Keven Catalan wasn’t scheduled to start at outside back for us, but he did such a good job today that we’re going to keep them there.”

Elma head coach Carl Seaburg was disappointed the Eagles couldn’t come away with the win and is hoping his team can grow from the loss as the season progresses.

“We both had some chances and overall, it is what it is. We’re just trying to get better,” he said. It’s nice to come down here and play them to a close game. They were down they’re starting striker, but the kids they had stepped up for them.”

Both teams will back in action in front of its home crowds on Friday. Elma will be looking for its first league win with a match against Tenino at 7 p.m.

Hoquiam will face a tough task and play the team that tied the Grizzlies atop the league standings last year when Forks comes to town.

Sanchez expects some energy to be inject into his lineup when Darras returns on Friday and is also hoping his team can play with more energy against one of the top teams in the league in Forks.

“This is a big week for us, but we’re not complete. We’re not game-ready yet as far as shape,” he said. “We were missing one of our better guys in the lineup, so you could tell we were missing that punch. We’re a different team with Connor in the lineup.”

Montesano 4, Raymond 2

Luis Muro made sure to get involved in every goal Montesano scored on Tuesday as the Bulldogs picked up a 4-2 home win against Raymond.

Muro had two goals and two assists in the contest and didn’t waste any time making an impact on the game with a goal in the seventh minute.

Monte (1-3, 1-0 Evergreen 1A) and Raymond (1-1, 0-1) went into halftime tied at a goal apiece, but Muro broke the deadlock with a successful penalty kick in the 50th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said it was good to watch his team execute the game plan as the match continued.

“We had a quite a few chances and we started to slowly gain confidence as the game went on,” he said. “We also did well in not getting beat by their counter attack.”

Muro also contributed on Monte’s insurance goals. He picked up an assist when Joel Peterson headed the ball into the net after a corner kick from Muro.

Montesano’s fourth goal of the night came from Eli Wilson, who also benefited from a Muro assist.

The Bulldogs will be looking for its second league win when they hit the road to face Ilwaco on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Raymond will finish its non-league schedule with a game Castle Rock at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
