Trio of Twin Harbors athletes win multiple titles at district championship meet

Willapa Valley’s Layman and Friese, North Beach’s Cox win twice at 2B District IV Championships

A trio of Twin Harbors student-athletes won multiple championships on Friday at the 2B District IV Championship meet at WF West High School in Chehalis.

North Beach junior Lorin Cox repeated as district champion in both the 100 and 200 sprints, winning with times of 13.03 and 26.76, respectively.

The Willapa Valley Vikings had two multi-event winners in Hallee Layman and Brooke Friese.

Layman, a junior thrower, won district titles in the shot put (37-03.50) and the discus (128-11).

The dynamic Friese won championships in both the 100-meter hurdles (16.02) and the pole vault (10-06).

Willapa Valley’s Hannah Cook also won an event, placing first in the 300-meter hurdles as the Vikings placed third overall in the girls team competition.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Willapa Valley head coach Dave Ege said. “All five (girls) moved on to Cheney next week for the state championships. It was just a great overall effort.”

Raymond’s Kyra Gardner won the high jump competition, leaping 5-06 to beat Ocosta’s Devyn Martin, who had a personal-best mark of 5-04.

Gardner is one of four Seagulls athletes that will be attending their first state championship meet.

“We will be taking three freshmen and one senior to state, and it will be the first trip for all of them,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “We were really hoping to qualify a few more, but I’m happy with the effort we got from everyone.”

North Beach’s Isaiah Richards was the only Twin Harbors athlete to win a boys district title on Friday. The junior pole vaulter cleared 12-09 to win the district title by three inches.
