Toledo grinds out 27-0 win over Pe Ell-Willapa Valley

MENLO — The halftime ceremonies wound up being far more memorable than the game itself for Pe Ell-Willapa Valley.

Fourth-ranked Toledo put on an impressive ground display in beating eighth-rated PWV, 27-0, in a non-league battle of state-ranked football teams Friday night at Crogstad Field.

About two dozen members of Willapa Valley’s 1996 and 2001 state B-11 championship teams were honored during halftime festivities. Current Willapa Valley superintendent Rob Friese was the head coach of both teams and Titan head coach Josh Fluke and assistants John Peterson, Greg Wonhoff and Eric Clements were involved with at least one of those clubs as either players or coaches.

By the time the ceremonies commenced, however, the outcome of Friday’s contest was all but assured.

Well-balanced Toledo (4-0) scored on three of its first four possessions in owning a 20-0 halftime lead. Four Indian backs rushed for at least 80 yards, with senior quarterback Dalton Yoder amassing a game-high 115 yards on 10 carries.

Yoder, a strapping 235-pounder with good mobility, was a handful for the Titans in the open field. This game, however, was won up front.

The Indians repeatedly opened holes for runs that netted between 5 and 10 yards. Meanwhile, their defense contained PWV workhorse Kaelin Jurek.

Jurek’s 84 rushing yards on 23 carries was a testament to his ability to find secondary holes and pick up additional yardage following contact. Only two of his carries produced gains of at least 10 yards.

“They dominated the line of scrimmage, both offense and defense,” Fluke acknowledged. “Our play wasn’t as good as the last couple of weeks. But props to them. They dominated us.”

The Titans (2-2) had both of their scoring threats halted by holding penalties.

Down 7-0, PWV marched to the Toledo 12-yard line via a couple of decent Jurek runs and two defensive penalties in the first quarter. A holding call, however, forced the Titans into a second-and-24 situation and they eventually lost the ball on downs.

Jurek runs of 10 and 8 yards enabled PWV to reach the Toledo 20 in the second period before another holding infraction nullified another Jurek first-down run. Linebacker Austin Crawford intercepted quarterback Matt Pearson’s pass on the next play.

Yoder’s longest run of the night, a 53-yard keeper off the right side, set up Toledo’s first touchdown. Three plays later, the Indian quarterback went straight ahead for the score from 3 yards out.

The Indians covered 78 yards on 11 plays on their next possession. Yoder again had the drive’s longest gain, a 19-yarder, to set up Keyton Wallace’s 1-yard plunge on the second play of the second quarter.

Toledo’s only pass completion of the contest, Yoder’s 38-yard strike to Fano Hanson, put the Indians in scoring territory late in the first half. Yoder scored again on a 7-yard keeper. A missed conversion left it 20-0 at the half.

The Indians also scored on the opening series of the third quarter, with Dakota Robins doing the honors from 6 yards out. Jackson Kuzminsky kicked two conversions and Andreas Malunat a third for the visitors.

Junior linebacker Tyson Nissell was in on numerous tackles for PWV and drew Coach Fluke’s post-game praise.

The Titans open Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division play Friday at Ocosta.
