Montesano sweeps home track meet, while North Beach and Raymond boys prevail

Bulldogs sweep

MONTESANO — Montesano ran away from the competition both literally and figuratively to sweep the boys and girls team competition in a three-team meet with Castle Rock and Tenino at Jack Rottle Field on Thursday.

The Bulldogs cruised to victory on the boys side with 118 points as a team, more than doubling up second-place Castle Rock with 47 points. Tenino finished with 12 points.

Montesano also rolled to the win on the girls side with 85 points. Tenino scored 39 as a team to finish second, while Castle Rock posted 23 points.

“We held some people back getting ready for Saturday (for the Bellevue Christian Invitational), but overall it was a pretty good meet,” Montesano girls coach Doug Schupbach said. “We had several PRs today and that is always a good sign.”

Montesano’s Bryce Whipple and Lyle Burbidge each came away with three titles on the day. Whipple sprinted to the win in the 100 in 11.71 and also leaped to a title in the triple jump. Burbidge won the 110 and 300 hurdles as well as teaming up with Whipple, Trevor Ridgway and Donovan Albert to win the 4×400.

Jake Mustard won the 800 and 1,600, while Seth Dierkop won the shot put and javelin. Cole Bradbury posted a personal best distance of 112-7 to win the discus and Brennen Wolcott jumped to a personal best 18-9 1/2 in the long jump. Logan Clements won the 3,200 and Eicke Schoneberger won the pole vault to round out the Bulldogs titles on the boys side.

Montesano had four individuals win two events. Hannah Barre topped the field in the 100 and posted a personal best in the 200. Elizabeth Peterson posted a personal record to win the 800 and tied with Lindsey Hutchings for the title in the 1,600, while Madison Schupbach leaped her way to the 100 hurdles and triple jump. Jordan Spradlin tossed her way to the shot put and discus titles.

Shayla Floch was the only other Bulldog to win a title with a 5-0 in the high jump.

North Beach meet

OYEHUT — North Beach registered a boys meet team win, as well as several event wins and personal bests, during its Pacific League meet on Thursday afternoon.

In the boys meet, the Hyaks easily flew away from the field with 196 points, including nine event wins — two each from Miguel Eastman (100 & 200m), Rodney Washington (high jump and triple jump) and Jeffery Eison (1600 & 3200m).

In the girls meet, North Beach finished second behind Life Christian Academy and walked away with four individual event wins, led by Lorin Cox’s wins in the 100 and 200m sprints.

The Hyaks swept the boys relays, with Patrick Day Heyd, Tavo Muro, Miguel Eastman and Washington running both events. Hunter Dianovich also won the shot put.

Willapa Valley’s Bryce Sanaski won the pole vault, while Mary M. Knight’s Ian Frost won the discus. Taholah’s Levi Jackson won the javelin and teammate Dylan James won the long jump.

“We got just about everyone on the track twice this week, which is good,” Willapa Valley head coach Dave Ege said. Ege noted that several competitors were held out for Saturday’s Shleton Invitational.

Ege cited Peter Hamilton for a PR in the shot put and Olivia Betrozoff for a PR in the triple jump.

Cox was joined in the winner’s circle with Mariah Vogler in the 800m and Brooklyn Neal in the 100m hurdles.

Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Sowle won three events, sweeping the high, long and triple jumps.

North River eighth-grader Ruby Gumaelius won the 1600m and Leanna White won the 3200m for the Mustangs.

Taholah swept the throws, with Celisha Ralston winning the shot put and discus and Denise Dolan claiming the javelin.

Raymond meet

RAYMOND — Dominating the field events, host Raymond captured the boys half of the a multi-school meet Thursday.

The Seagulls amassed 178 points to top runner-up Ilwaco by 56 1/2 points. Northwest Christian won the girls meet.

Luke Hamilton and Marcus Anderson were double winners for Raymond’s boys. Hamilton doubled in the shot put and discus. Anderson took the 400 meters and triple jump.

Raymond’s Sean Sath and McCartney Maden each established personal bests in the boys short hurdles. Sath won it in 15.53.

“Those guys going one-two in the hurdles was a big win for us,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said.

Jace Duckworth cleared 13 feet in the boys pole vault.

Karlee Freeman enjoyed a big day for Raymond’s girls. Her winning throw of 159-7 was only one inch off the personal best she established winning state last year. She also surpassed her previous-best mark in the shot by some three feet with a throw of 37-2 and won her season debut in the 100 hurdles.

A.J. Sanchez was a triple winner for South Bend’s boys. He took the 100 meters in 11.68, the 300 hurdles in 42.13 and the long jump with a leap of 20-7.

South Bend coach Steve Lazelle also cited the performances of Preston Lawhead in the sprints and Katelyn Doyle in the girls triple jump.

Ocosta’s Kathryn Anderson captured the girls 800 and 1,600 meters and was also a member of a winning mile relay quartet. Her 5:41.59 in the 1,600 was a personal best.

“It was pretty windy and she was running totally alone,” her father and coach Aaron Anderson observed.

Coach Anderson also commended the performances of Layne Martin, Alex Bailey and Danny Lennon.

Wishkah’s Erica Bomhoff had personal best marks in the girls 100 meters and javelin. Logger coach Bob Eager also commended the showings of Duncan Palmgren and Nicole Schrotberger.

“We did have some strong performances,” Eager said. “We had a meet Tuesday, so some of them were still tight from that. Overall, for the conditions and everything, I thought they did a pretty good job.”
