Thursday Prep Roundup: Monte nips stubborn Grizzlies in soccer

GIRLS SOCCER

Bulldogs 1, Grizzlies 0

MONTESANO — Samantha Stanfield’s goal early in the second half enabled Montesano to edge defensive-minded Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League contest Thursday at Rottle Field.

The league champion Bulldogs (7-0, 12-1-1) dominated time of possession. But packing in their defense, the Grizzlies (2-4, 4-9-1) were able to prevent Montesano from launching many quality shots.

“Hoquiam did a good job of packing everybody in and clearing the ball with one big kick,” Monte coach Fidel Sanchez said. “That disrupted everything we did because we had to reset every single time. That was their plan and they did it very well…But it was important for our seniors to go out with a win on Senior Night.”

“We definitely worked out butts off,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said.

About two minutes into the second half, Stanfield put in the rebound of a Hollie Stubb shot that hit the crossbar.

Montesano defenders Hannah Barre and Katie Granstrom were cited by Sanchez for fine performances.

Grannemann cited Kayla Delahanty for marking up effectively on Stanfield. Grizzly defender Kylee Bagwell was also commended for fine play.

On Tuesday, the Grizzlies host Elma and Montesano is scheduled to visit Forks.

Eagles 2 (3), Beavers 2 (2)

ELMA — It was a nailbiter but Elma prevailed on penalty kicks to pull out an Evergreen 1A League victory Tuesday at Davis Field.

Elma (4-2, 8-4) is now solidly in second place in the 1A league after the win.

Tenino (3-4, 6-4) got the scoring started with a goal in the 13th minute but Elma tied it up soon after with a goal from Jayla Mason on a cross from Kassedy Olson in the 24th minute.

Tenino regained the lead in the 35th minute but Brooke Sutherby tied it up again in the 65th minute on a pass from Kayli Johnson.

Sutherby, Olson, Rebeka Lensegrav and Kaelyn Burgher all scored on penalty kicks while Holli Ray came up with two big saves in the shootout.

Elma coach Scott Rockey said his team never gave up.

“They fought hard, stayed together and kept talking to each other,” he said. “That’s what it takes to win a

tough game like that.”

Rockey also highlighted Johnson, Molly Johnston and Emily Newberry for their contributions.

Elma will travel to Hoquiam on Tuesday.

Eagles win in three

ELMA — Dominant from the beginning, Elma clinched at least a share of the Evergreen 1A League title with a 25-6, 25-12, 25-22 win over Tenino on Thursday.

Baylee Crisp was a big part of her team’s offense and had 20 assists in the match. Quin Mikel also had a strong game and had 11 kills and provided a lot of energy to her squad.

The team played well despite the absence of starting setter Kenna Stoney.

Elma head coach Kendra Henry said she was proud of the way her team adjusted.

“I think we did a good job coming in, not having their normal line-up and adjusting to it,” Henry said. “Baylee and Quinn did a really good job stepping up.”

Elma also won the JV match, 25-22, 25-15.

The Eagles (6-0, 11-1) visit Hoquiam on Tuesday.

MENLO — Ocosta used strong serving and hitting to remain unbeaten in Pacific 2B League play with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Willapa Valley on Thursday at Tenoski Gym.

Erika Snider, Emily’s sister, was also 100 percent in her serving.

“We hit the ball really well,” Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus said. “Of course, it starts with the pass and we were passing the ball really well.”

Willapa Valley coach Lori Snodgrass wasn’t disappointed with her team’s showing.

“I honestly felt like we played better against them tonight than we did earlier in the season,” she said.

Katelyn McGough had six kills and Brooke Friese eight digs for the Vikings (3-4, 7-6). Katie Adkins was cited for passing.

Willapa Valley seniors Sidney Pollard and Emilee Layman, honored in pre-match ceremonies, were praised for their leadership.

T-Birds top Cats in four

TUMWATER — Aberdeen fell in four sets to Tumwater on Thursday but picked up a moral victory when the Bobcats were able to take a set off the reigning state 2A champions.

Aberdeen fell 25-18, 25-11, 25-27 and 25-11, but Bobcat head coach Doug Basler liked his team’s competitive spirit.

“Tumwater is the number one team in the league so I’m really impressed with how our girls fought,” he said. “They fought really hard and a lot of it was scrappy defense. They were digging everything and our serve- receive was excellent.”

Malynda Winston was a key part of the win in the third set and helped the team score six straight points with her service game. Tamara Corona was a catalyst from the libero position and helped out with a number of digs.

Hailee Baretich and Ana Arquette had six kills each, with Arquette adding three blocks.

Elks win in three

TAHOLAH — Lake Quinault remained unbeaten in Coastal 1B League play by downing stubborn Taholah, 27-25, 25-21, 25-17, on Thursday at Taholah.

“Everybody was playing flat-footed,” Lake Quinault coach Sue Kalama said. “The only thing that saved us was our tips. It was a tough match.”

Kalama cited a pair of eighth-graders — Naveah Richardson for her serving and Sarah Thomas for defense.

On Tuesday, the Elks (7-0, 10-1) visit Wishkah while Taholah travels to Oakville.

Hyaks fall in three

Mariah Vogler had nine aces and seven kills and was one of the most consistent players the Hyaks (1-5, 1-10) had on Thursday.

Hyaks head coach Sharayah Miller’s said her team has had trouble getting comfortable in their changing roles this season.

“I haven’t had consistent players all season,” she said. “I’ve been changing it up because I haven’t had the same girls available every week.”

North Beach will face Northwest Christian on Monday on the road.
