Thursday Prep Roundup: Hoquiam soccer secures share of league title

BOYS SOCCER

Grizzlies 2, Spartans 0

Hoquiam secured a share of the Evergreen 1A League title with a win over Forks at Sea Breeze Oval on Thursday.

The Grizzlies (6-2, 10-5) put together a steady barrage of offense throughout the game and were able to score two in the second half to win the match. Despite having several scoring chances, Hoquiam remained tied 0-0 at halftime.

In the 52nd minute, Tigre Falla put away what would be the game winner. Falla was tackled by a defender, but fought his way back to the ball and was able to put in a left footed shot from 12 yards out.

Jose Juarez was able to get some separation and took a pass from Connor Darras, ran on and blasted a shot in from 14 yards out to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute.

“We had a goal as a team and we accomplished it,” Hoquiam head coach Fidel Sanchez said of the league title. “For whatever reason, when we play (Forks) we get good passes, but we just can’t get that final touch in the final third to score, but today we did.”

Hoquiam will have a bye in the first round of the District IV boys soccer tournament before facing the winner of Montesano vs. La Center at 5 p.m. on May 11 at King’s Way Christian.

SOFTBALL

Eagles 11, Spartans 5

ELMA — Playing in between breaks due to lightning and wet weather, Elma finished off its Evergreen 1A League schedule with a win over Forks at the Ventron Complex on Thursday.

Kaylee Rambo led the Eagles with three hits, including a double and five RBI, at the plate. Peyton Elliott added two RBI on two hits, including a double.

In the circle, Quin Mikel and Corrina Torres got their work in against the Spartans, who smacked 11 hits. Mikel struck out eight and walked one in three innings of work for the win.

“We were lucky to get it in with the weather; we switched over to the junior varsity field to finish it,” Elma head coach Roger Elliott said. “We tried to get everyone in.”

On Thursday, Elma (6-2, 8-2) travels to Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in a non-league contest.

“We got our bats going right away and stayed pretty intense defensively,” Wishkah head coach Tove Reibel said. “We stayed focused the whole way and that was the key to the win.”

The victory secures the Loggerettes a second place finish in league play and a place in the district tournament.

Ocosta meet

WESTPORT — North Beach’s boys and Willapa Valley’s girls took second in their respective team totals to help finish off the regular season in this Pacific 2B/1B League meet at Ocosta High School on Thursday.

Ben Bridge led the Hyaks with two wins in the throws — shot put and discus — with teammate Brendan Chaney winning the pole vault, Miguel Eastman claimed the 200m sprint and Rodney Washington winning the high jump.

South Bend’s Logan Stamos won the 110 hurdles and Jacob Lush won the long jump. Ocosta’s Cosmo Silver won the 300m hurdles.

In the girls’ meet, Hallee Layman won the discus with a career-best 90-9 throw for Willapa Valley’s lone win. Vikings head coach Dave Ege cited Layman for her throws, as well as Hannah Cook, who got a 1-second PR in the 100 hurdles behind Napavine’s Mollie Olson.

“We had some solid performances in some less than optimal track weather,” Ege said. “You have to learn how to compete in this weather.”

North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship won the 100m sprint and the pole vault. Ocosta’s Layne Martin won the high jump and McKenzie Ballo won the 3200 run. North River eighth-grader Ruby Gumaelius won the 800m and finished second in the 1600m.

Ocosta head coach Aaron Anderson cited Rebecca Holm for collecting PRs in the 100m and 400m sprints and Evan Waara for a PR in the 400m sprint.
