State Golf Roundup: Grubb, Parker lead Montesano to fourth-place state finish

One season removed from school’s first golf state title, Bulldogs add more hardware to trophy case

Monte’s girls take fourth at state

Though they sent just two golfers to the 1A State Tournament, consistent rounds from Glory Grubb and Mylaina Parker led the Bulldogs to a fourth-place tie on Wednesday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club.

The Bulldogs and Klahowya had to share the fourth-place trophy as the schools tied with 58.5 team points apiece. Charles Wright Academy won comfortably with 92.5 points thanks to points earned from tournament-winner Emersyn Walker and third-place finisher Emily Chen.

Grubb finished 10th with a tournament total of 168 and Mylaina Parker placed 13th with 172 strokes for the tournament.

Grubb has become familiar with the course since at Tumwater Valley Golf Club for districts and said that she became more sure of herself when she avoided some of the hazards on the course that have previously given her trouble.

“I gained more confidence every time I didn’t go in a sand trap,” she said. “Every time I hit one solid off the tee I gained more confidence.”

Parker had to fight through some adversity to crack the top 15. After a rough stretch of holes on the front nine, Parker found her groove and picked up par on three straight holes to keep pace with some of the top golfers in the field.

Montesano head coach Doug Galloway, whose team won the school’s first golf state title last season, said taking home the fourth-place trophy was a big accomplishment considering what Parker and Grubb had to fight through to keep their scores low.

“This was fantastic,” he said. “The girls really played through some rough points today and they came back with fourth place in state. I’m super proud of the girls.”

Hoquiam also sent two golfers to the second day of competition. Bailey Smith shot 94 on both days of the tournament to finish with a total of 188 and finish in 31st place.

The Grizzlies’ Brooke Bogdanovich ended the state tournament with a score of 194 and ended up in 41st place.

On the boys side of the 1A tournament, Montesano’s Payson Parker was the top placing golfer from the Harbor with a tournament total of 168 to finish 16th.

Hoquiam’s Josh Burgher wasn’t too far behind and shot a 170 to finish in a three-way tie for 19th. Teammate Brayden Dayton saw his score elevate from an 85 on a day one to a 97 on day two of tournament and finished 31st out of 40 golfers.

Burgher and Dayton combined to score 26 team points and earn a tie for seventh wtih Cascade Christian.

Aberdeen’s Ryder Heikkla shot a 91 followed by a 92 for a two-day total of 183 to finish 27th on the leaderboard at the 2A State Girls Golf Tournament on Wednesday at MeadowWood Golf Course in Spokane.
