CASTLE ROCK — Hoquiam’s bats came alive as the Grizzlies rolled bast Castle Rock in a non-league game on Saturday.

The Grizzlies (1-2) pounded out 10 hits to put up 10 runs on the host Rockets. Sean McAllister set the tone for the game in the first inning with a three-run blast off Castle Rock’s Parker Patching. Hoquiam put up five runs in the third.

“One through nine, we hit very well and had a lot of quality at bats.” Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said. “We played the kind of baseball we like to play.”

Jump cited McAllister, Jerod Steen, who received the win on the mound and reached base all four times at the plate, as well as Marques Rivera and Garrett Bradley for their performances.

Hoquiam hosts Elma on Tuesday.

WESTPORT — Two Naselle pitchers limited Ocosta to four hits in this non-league match-up on Saturday afternoon at the GAR Park.

Cole Hatton’s single knocked in Kobe Beck with Ocosta’s lone run in the sixth inning. That trimmed the deficit to 2-1, but the Comets sandwiched two hits around two walks to score three times in the top of the seventh.

“Early in the game, we put the ball in play but we couldn’t find any holes,” Ocosta coach Mike Allton said. “We just didn’t take advantage of the opportunities with runners on base.”

The Wildcats (1-2) were playing for the first time in nine days and were without three starters due to conflicting activities.

Ocosta is scheduled to host the Montesano junior varsity on Monday before traveling to Chief Leschi on Tuesday.

Spradlin honored

BATTLE GROUND — Montesano senior Jordan Spradlin earned the Female Field Athlete of the Meet award in Battle Ground’s star-studded Tiger Invitational on Saturday.

Spradlin won the girls shot put with a meet-record mark of 43-7 1/2. She also took the discus with a 122-7 throw.

A total of 22 teams — the vast majority of them from 2A, 3A and 4A schools — competed. Camas swept the boys and girls team titles, with Montesano’s girls placing ninth.

Monte’s Shayla Floch cleared 5 feet to tie for second in the girls high jump and took third in the long jump with a season-best 15-10 1/2.

Considering the competition, finishing in the top 15 in any event represented an accomplishment for the Bulldogs.

“We had a real good meet,” Monte boys coach Brian Hollatz said. “It was really stiff competition. The kids stepped up and we had a lot of personal records and season records today.”

Montesano’s best boys finish came in the 4×400-meter relay. The foursome of Brennen Wolcott, Bryce Whipple, Jordan Tibbitt and Donovan Albert placed fifth.

Hollatz cited Seth Dierkop for a career-best 44-2 in the boys shot put. Sam Winter, Lyle Burbidge, Hannah Barre and Jamie Anthony were also commended for their performances.

The Bulldogs visit Hoquiam in a dual meet Thursday.

BOYS SOCCER

Eagles 1, Bearcats 1

CHEHALIS — Elma and Chehalis showed of plenty of defense as they played to a 1-1 tie in a non-league match at Chehalis on Saturday.

The Eagles (1-4-1) got on the board first in the 18th minute when a cross from Carlos Bautista was deflected by a Chehalis defender and past the goalkeeper.

Elma almost added a second in the 60th minute, but a free kick was just out of the reach of Trace Thompson.

Chehalis tied the match up in the 70th minute when the Bearcats were able to steal the ball and send a pass to the far post where it was kicked home.

“In the first half, we had a couple really good opportunities and we were able to control the ball, but we just weren’t able to get anything real dangerous,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “In the second half, they committed a few more people forwards. Overall, I was pretty happy with the game. It would have been nice to see it all the way through, but definitely an improvement in some areas as we continue to feel out where we are.”

Elma travels to Forks on Tuesday.
