Saturday sports roundup: Montesano and Elma each win 1-0 in girls soccer

GIRLS SOCCER

Bulldogs 1, Haus 0

MONTESANO — Samantha Stanfield scored with two minutes remaining on Saturday to give Montesano a non-league victory over the Northwest School of Seattle at Rottle Field.

The Bulldogs (3-1) outshot the Haus 10-0, but couldn’t find break the scoring ice until the 78th minute. Stanfield launched what was intended to be a crossing pass, but it curved into the net.

Montesano’s Brooke Streeter had a prime scoring chance midway through the second half accidentally blocked by a teammate inside the penalty area.

“We’re making attacks and defending well,” Monte coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We’re just not getting to the area where we need to be where they are high-percentage shots.”

Outside defender Hallie Stubb was cited by Sanchez for a strong performance.

Montesano’s junior varsity won at Rochester, 4-0. Ellie Jones scored twice and Cassidy Golding and Ava Poler had one goal apiece for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs visit Class 2A Centralia on Tuesday.

Eagles 1, Warriors 0

ROCHESTER — Elma made Brooke Sutherby’s first-half goal stand up in a non-league victory over Rochester on Saturday at Rochester.

Sutherby scored in the 34th minute, off a crossing path from Molly Johnston.

Although outshooting Rochester 18-3, the Eagles (4-1-1) were unable to add to their total.

“We were knocking on their door a lot,” Eagle coach Scott Rockey said. “We had a lot of action, but the finishing wasn’t there.”

Sutherby and Johnston were cited not only for their play but their leadership in keeping the Eagles calm during a physically played match.

Elma visits Class 2A Chehalis on Tuesday.

FOOTBALL

Gulls 47, Wolverines 13

TUMWATER — McCartney Maden rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns as Raymond thumped Friday Harbor in a non-league game Saturday at the Black Hills High School field.

Maden broke a 50-yard touchdown run on Raymond’s opening possession.

Tight end Brandt Rockwell caught a 21-yard scoring pass from Jack Jordan and Maden tallied on a 9-yard run to give the Gulls (1-2) a 20-0 lead after one quarter.

Maden added a 63-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Patrick Edwards’ 4-yard run, Reese Garcia’s 8-yard run and Joseph Villalpando’s 18-yard run accounted for Raymond’s other second-half TDs.

Garcia kicked five conversions.

Edwards rushed for 82 yards and Jordan passed for 62.

Raymond coach Luke Abbott said the Gulls tackled well as a team.

“I believe we’re starting to figure things out as a team,” Abbott said. “They’re understanding their roles. Overall, I was fairly happy with the way we played.”

The Gulls close out the non-league portion of their schedule at Wahkiakum on Friday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Apple Ridge Invite

COWICHE — Montesano’s Martin Shuck and Braden Stowers placed 19th and 20th, respectively, in the boys Varsity III race at the Apple Ridge Invitational hosted by Highland High School on Saturday.

Shuck was closed in 18:03.8 for three miles, one second faster than Stowers.

Montesano’s Madelyn Prall was 32nd in the the girls Varsity III race, with a time of 25:18. Her teammate Madolyn Olson was 33rd.
