AUBURN — Well-balanced Grays Harbor College shrugged off a slow start to roll to its 18th straight win by trouncing Green River in an NWAC Western Division game Saturday at Auburn.

Angela Sikora scored 20 points and Alexia Thrower and Sandin Kidder 17 apiece for the Chokers (6-0, 18-1). Estelle Wilson was the fourth Choker in double figures with 13 points.

Thrower also pulled down 11 rebounds, while Kidder handed out 10 assists.

Green River’s Arianna Dougall led all scorers with 35 points.

The Chokers struggled for one quarter against division cellar-dwelling Green River, leading only 14-13 after one quarter. They dominated the final three.

“We had balanced scoring but missed a lot of open looks early and often,” GHC coach Chad Allan said. “It’s great to be 18-1 but there’s still a lot of work to put in and improve.”

The Chokers host South Puget Sound on Wednesday.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Auburn tourney

AUBURN — With Mackayla Waltee defeating a teammate in the championship match, Aberdeen placed second in the Athena’s Pageant tournament hosted by Auburn High School on Saturday.

Elma’s Jamison Carrell also won a title in the multi-classification event.

Aberdeen placed second to Rogers of Puyallup in the team standings. Team scores were not reported.

Although the Bobcats had eight wrestlers placed in the top four, Waltee produced their only title. She downed teammate Thalia Cook in the 155-pound title match.

Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas (105) and Kenadi Bridges (135) also placed second in their classifications. Maya Kuhl (130) and sisters Karli (170) and Tatum (190) Heikkila each placed third, with Madison Neeley (100) taking fourth.

“I thought we wrestled well as a team in our last tournament before the postseason,” Bobcat coach Craig Yakovich said. “After this performance, I think we have an excellent shot to three-peat as district champions next weekend in Centralia.”

Elma’s Carrell, who came from behind to decision Aberdeen’s Kuhl in the third round, decisioned Fife’s Nathalie Singh, 8-4, in the 130-pound title round.

“Jamison has shown a lot of heart and is peaking at the right time,” Elma coach Russ Luellen said. “She defeated two girls today that have beaten her this season.”

Elma’s Taylor Dick was fourth at 125 pounds.

Other Twin Harbors results were not reported.

Indians 30, Gulls 23

SOUTH BEND — Outscoring rival Raymond 17-0 in the fourth quarter, South Bend emerged with a somewhat bizarre Pacific 2B League victory on Saturday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Indians (8-6, 12-6) prevailed despite scoring one point in the first quarter and being blanked entirely in the third period. They trailed 23-13 entering the final stanza.

While the defense was blanking Raymond in the fourth quarter, South Bend’s Karley Reidinger and Jessica Sanchez were combining for 16 points in that period.

Reidinger, who had 10 of those markers, put the Tribe ahead to stay by making all ends of a three-shot foul with 2:41 remaining. She finished with 13 points.

Sanchez also scored 13 points before fouling out in the final period. She also contributed nine rebounds and four steals.

“I’m proud of our effort down the stretch,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson. “I don’t think anybody in the gym thought much of our chances in the first couple of minutes of the fourth quarter.”

He also cited his reserves for holding down Raymond when three South Bend starters drew their fourth fouls in the third quarter.

Makenna Williams scored 12 points for Raymond (5-9, 6-12).

On Monday, South Bend travels to Life Christian and Raymond is home against Ocosta.

BOYS SWIMMING

SWW Championships

LONGVIEW — Aberdeen tied for ninth among 18 schools in the all-classification Southwest Washington Invitational on Saturday at the Mark Morris High School pool.

The Bobcats totaled 80 points. Lindbergh of Renton, which somehow wangled an invitation to what is otherwise a Southwest Washington meet, took team honors with 529 points.

Aberdeen’s highest finish were 10ths in the 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays. Jared Durr, Trevor Mullin, Sage Bridges and Conner Gates made up the medley relay team, while the freestyle foursome was composed of Gates, Brice Kola, Durr and Bridges.

Gates was the leading Bobcat individual, taking 16th in the 100 freestyle.

“We know where we are right now inside the 2A district circles,” AHS coach Rob Burns said. “This was a great meet for us. With two weeks to go before the start of the district meet, we know what we need to do between now and then.”

He cited Gates for his work in the sprints and Clayton Anderson for his performances in the distances and relays.

The Bobcats will close out their dual season at home against River Ridge on Monday.
