Raymond wins twice to earn state volleyball berth

Freeman leads Raymond to state volleyball berth

SOUTH BEND — Raymond rose to the occasion to end a 13-year state volleyball drought.

Karlee Freeman pounded out 45 kills in two matches as the Gulls earned a state berth with three-set victories over South Bend and Northwest Christian in the District IV Class 2B Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

Raymond first eliminated South Bend, 25-20, 25-21, 25-14. The Gulls then avenged a previous loss by sweeping Northwest Christian, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21, in another loser-out match.

The Seagulls (14-4) thus clinched one of the district’s six state volleyball berths. It will be their first state appearance since 2004.

One of six teams still alive in the double-elimination tournament, Raymond can finish as high as third. The Gulls will face Pacific League champion Life Christian Academy at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Raymond.

The winner of that match will take on either Toutle Lake or Kalama later in the day in a match to determine third and fourth places. A coin flip between the losers of those two matches will decide fifth and sixth.

Mossyrock and Napavine will collide for the district championship at 3 p.m.

The Gulls approached their peak in both matches Wednesday.

“It was pretty darned incredible how we played tonight,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “All 11 of them were 100 percent into it. They’re the epitome of teamwork.”

Freeman dominated both matches, putting down 22 kills against South Bend and 23 against Northwest Christian.

The Raymond senior had plenty of help from her teammates. Maddi Murray delivered 14 kills against South Bend and nine kills against NWC.

Setter Makenna Williams had four kills on tips in the South Bend match. Swogger also credited libero Kennis Harland with an outstanding defensive performance in both contests.

South Bend’s Jessica Sanchez put down 17 kills against Raymond. Tribe coach Tricia Needham cited Riley Hampton for an outstanding performance.

“The girls played strong the first two games and simply self-destructed in the third,” Needham said.

South Bend finished with a 5-12 season record.

“I’m encouraged by the team’s improvement over the course of the season and am looking forward to next year,” Needham said.

Northwest Christian eliminated Willapa Valley, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-11, earlier in the South Bend program. Details were unavailable.

The Vikings concluded their season at 9-8.
