Aberdeen’s season ends

CENTRALIA — The Bobcats’ hopes of advancing to the state playoffs were dashed on Thursday with back-to-back district playoff losses to Ridgefield and Tumwater at Borst Park in Centralia.

Kaia Oliver struck out 18 and allowed just seven hits in leading Ridgefield to a shutout win over Aberdeen 1-0 in the Bobcats’ first-round tournament game.

Karli Oliver scored the only run of the game, coming home on an RBI double from Emma Jenkins in the third inning.

Jalyn McDaniel was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Aberdeen, allowing the lone earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. The Bobcats hurler didn’t allow a walk.

Later that afternoon, Aberdeen lost to Tumwater 17-7 in an elimination game.

The Bobcats (10-12 overall) led 7-6 after three innings of play but were stonewalled by Tumwater relief pitcher Savannah Owen, who allowed just one hit and no runs over the final four innings of the game.

Leading 11-7 in the top of the seventh, Tumwater put the game out of reach by scoring six runs in its final at-bat.

Katie Cunningham went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six runs driven in for a Tumwater team that totalled four home runs in the game.

Abereen was led by Logan Glanz, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Tamara Corona went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Angel Jones went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Bobcats.

Host of locals earn state berth after district championship meet

MONTESANO — Twin Harbors area athletes collected seven championships and 31 state-meet qualifications at the 1A District IV Championships held Thursday at Montesano High School.

The Elma Eagles girls team finished in a tie for second place with King’s Way Christian with 79 points, well back of the 114 points put up by district champion Seton Catholic.

Elma was led by thrower Jalyn Sackrider and hurdler Jillian Bieker.

Sackrider took home district titles in the shot put (35-09.50) and discus (109-00) while Bieker won the 300-meter hurdles (47.70) and qualified for the state meet with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.11. Bieker, along with Jayla Mason, Mesa Zang and Maddi Clark, took the district championship in the girls 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:15.24.

Montesano’s Madolyn Olson was crowned district champion with a win in the girls 400 meters (61.58) and Hoqiuam’s Karlie Krohn won the javelin title with a personal-best throw of 120-04.

The Montesano Bulldogs placed second in the district as a team with a total of 76.5 points behind Stevenson’s 122.

Monte had just one district winner on the boys side — Donovan Albert winning the 400-meter title with a time of 50.81 — but amassed a total of eight state qualifiers, nearly half of the boys state qualifiers for area 1A schools.

Hoquiam’s Caleb Larsen was the only other local athelte to win a boys 1A District IV title. The junior won the shot put crown with a throw of 48-07.50.
