Teams from Aberdeen, Ocosta, Raymond and South Bend High Schools set to compete this weekend

The spring playoffs season is upon us as several Twin Harbors teams will be in action today.

The 2B District baseball playoffs start today with Ocosta, South Bend and Raymond competing in the tournament.

South Bend, the No. 3 seed out of the Pacific 2B league, has a play-in game at noon versus Onalaska at Adna High School in Chehalis.

Raymond also has a play-in game at noon against Rainier, the Central league’s No. 4 seed, at Ocosta High School.

The Ocosta Wildcats will represent the Pacific 2B as the No. 1 seed and will host the Raymond/Rainier winner at 3 p.m.

Aberdeen’s boys soccer team, which earned the No. 2 seed out of the Evergreen 2A league, will host Ridgefield at 1 p.m. today in the first round of the 2A District playoffs.

Montesano’s baseball team earned the top seed out of the Evergreen 1A league and will face Castle Rock at 6 p.m. when the 2A District baseball playoffs on Monday at Olympic Stadium.

Hoquiam and Elma’s baseball teams will also be in action on Monday. Elma’s first-round game will be at at 4 p.m. at Castle Rock High School against the Trico League’s No. 1 team (yet to be determined). Hoquiam will face the Trico No. 3 seed at 4 p.m. at Olympic Stadium.

Track & Field

Ocosta showing promise

PUYALLUP — Ocosta track athletes are showing promise as the district meet draws near, winning two events at the Pacific League Invite at Chief Leschi High School.

Freshman Kylee Poirer came through with a personal record and a win in the javelin with a distance of 102 feet, nine inches. Alex Baily also came away with a PR and won the pole vault with a height of 12 feet.

In the track events, Jaelyn Martin had a personal record in the 100-meter race with a time of 13.47 and Natalie Cain took third in the 800 meters.

Ocosta head coach Aaron Anderson said it was good to see fast times in the track events considering the weather.

“They were running into a headwind, so it was pretty impressive they were able to run fast times in those conditions,” he said.

Pacific 2B teams compete at North Beach meet

OCEAN SHORES — North Beach’s boys and Ilwaco’s girls won the team competitions ats the Pacific League held a track and field meet on Thursday at North Beach High School.

The Hyaks boys team won with 142.5 points. Ilwaco (133) and Raymond (120) finished second and third, respectively.

On the girls team competition, Ilwaco won with 188.5 points, with Nasalle (126) coming in second and North Beach (106.5) placing third.

Individually, several Twin Harbors athletes won events. Raymond’s Jimmy Thepsoumphou won the 100 meters (12.21) and the high jump (6-02). He also anchored the final leg of the Seagulls’ winning 4×100 meter relay team.

North Beach’s Evan Johnson was also a two-event winner at the meet, placing first in both the 100-meter hurdles (18.04) and the 300 hurdles (46.20).

The Hyaks’ David Nessa (3200m, 12:31.90), Ben Poplin (shot put, 47-03) and Brenden Chaney (12-00) also earned wins in their respective events.

South Bend’s Seth Hall won the boys 400 meters with a time of 57.20.

North Beach athletes also picked up several wins in the girls competition. The Hyaks’ Natasha Fruh (shot put, 36-09), Tawni Blankenship (pole vault, 10-00) and Mariah Vogler (triple jump, 31-03) picked up win in individual events. Blankenship and Vogler also combined with Skye Bartell and Lorin Cox to win the girls 4×100 relay with a time of 54.38.

Ocosta beats Evergreen Christian

OLYMPIA — The Ocosta Wildcats moved to 17-3 on the season with a 5-2 road victory over Evergreen Christian on Thursday.

Down 2-1, Ocosta scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead for good. Zach Allton walked with the sacks full to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead in the fourth followed by run-scoring singles from Hunter Hatton and Isaac O’Hagan in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2.

Brandon Harnden earned the win for Ocosta, allowing an earned run on six hits in 3-2/3 innings.

Kobe Beck earned the save, going 3-1/3 innings and scattering three hits. He retired seven of the final eight batters he faced.

Ocosta will be the No.1 seed out the Pacific 2B league and will face the winner of a play-in game at 3 p.m. today at WF West High School in Chehalis.

11-run inning pushes Grizzlies past Eagles

HOQUIAM — Hoquiam turned what was a close game wide open with an 11-run inning in its 16-6 win over Elma on Thursday.

The Grizzlies got RBIs from nine different batters in the contest.

Hoquiam coach Steve Jump said it was good to see his team perform at a high level before the start of the postseason.

“We needed a competitive boost going into districts and Marques Rivera did a great job setting the tone for us,” he said.

Rivera had four hits in the game for the Grizzlies.

Hoquiam and Elma have completed their regular season schedule and will wait to see how things shake out in the 1A Trico before finding out who they will play in the 1A District playoffs on Monday.

Ocosta blows out Onalaska

ONALASKA — Ocosta’s Kaylee Barnum and Kristi Raffelson each had home runs to lead the Ocosta softball team to an 18-7 win on the road against Onalaska High School Thursday.

Barnum went 2-for-4 with a two-run dinger, three runs scored and four RBI. Raffelson went 2-for-3 with a three-run bomb, a double, three runs scored and three RBI for a Wildcat offense that had 14 hits in the game.

Lillyan Barnum added three hits and a pair of RBI for the Wildcats (15-3, 10-0 Pacific 2B), which will be the No. 1 seed out of the Pacific 2B league when the softball district playoffs begin on May 14.

HOQUIAM – Hoquiam tallied eight hits and two homers in the third inning to fuel an 11-run outburst on its way to a 15-0 win over Tenino on Thursday.

Senior English Hyde was dominant on Senior Day, striking out eight and helping her cause with a homer.

Hoquiam is now locked into third place with the win.

Girls Golf

Season-best rounds lead to Aberdeen win

ABERDEEN — Ryder Heikkila and MacKayla Waltee had their best rounds of the season to lead the Aberdeen girls golf team to a 98-49 victory over Centralia on Thursday.

Heikkila carded a round of 28 while Waltee scored a 27 to lead the Bobcats, which uses the Stableford scoring system.

“The dynamic duo strikes again,” Bobcats head coach Dan Sundstrom said of the Bobcats top two golfers. “They are striking the ball really well right now.”

Aberdeen hosts Black Hills at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
