Prep Roundup: Montesano tennis earns share of league championship win over previously undefeated Castle Rock

Duo of Danica Peterson, Alexa Couch win top doubles match to clinch co-league title for Bulldogs

MONTESANO — The Montesano girls tennis team upset previously undefeated Castle Rock to earn a share of the Evergreen 1A title with a 3-2 victory over the Comets on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

“This is a nice way to cap off the season,” said Montesano head coach Theresa Helland, who added she had to play it cool to be respectful. “I was elated but as a coach I tried to play it down.”

Before the match, Helland gave a speech that aimed to relax and inspire her team.

“I told them, ‘We have a shot to finish as co-champion of the league. Let’s go out and have some fun. … If we go out there and are consistent and play like there is no tomorrow, we can do this.’”

With Sophie Barre and Anna Ayres winning two of three singles matches, the Bulldogs would have to win one of two doubles matches to clinch a share of the title with the Comets.

Danica Peterson and Alexa Couch took care of that in the first doubles match. Monte’s top pair defeated Castle Rock’s Erica Thwaites and Paige Mershon in a thrilling 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory, clinching the win and a share of the league title.

Monte (8-3 overall, 8-1 Evergreen 1A) turns its attention to Friday’s district tournament in Vancouver.

Singles: Del Castillo (CR) def. R. Ayres (M) 6-0, 6-2; Barre (M) def. Fontaine (CR) 7-6 (8-6), 6-3; A. Ayres (M) def. Ruiz-Sanchez (CR) 6-3, 6-4.
