Prep Roundup: Late Tumwater run thwarts Aberdeen softball’s upset bid

TUMWATER — A run in extra innnings broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Tumwater Thunderbirds a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Bobcats on Wednesday.

Aberdeen (6-10 overall, 4-8 Evergreen 2A) lead 1-0 through five innnings, but Tumwater (14-1, 11-1) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and one with two outs in the eighth to win it.

In the fifth inning, Logan Glanz singled and later scored Aberdeen’s only run.

Bobcats pitcher Jayln McDaniel pitched 7-2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Despite the loss, Aberdeen head coach Scott Wilson was proud of his players’ effort.

“It was one of the best game we’ve played all year even though we lost. Our pitching and defense was great and our kids played with a lot of heart,” he said.

Similar to what Sawyer did in game one, North Beach’s Ruby Pope did it all in game two. Pope went 4-for-5 with three runs and three doubles. She also pitched a complete game to pick up the win for the Hyaks.

TENINO – Elma is still looking for some consistency heading into districts after making a number of errors in a 12-5 loss to Tenino on Wednesday.

Elma was well within striking distance with the Beavers holding on to a 6-5 lead heading into the sixth inning, but some defensive miscues let Tenino blow the game open with six runs in the sixth.

Elma head coach Jim Hill was disappointed his team couldn’t take advantage of a strong start by Carter Jacobson.

“Carter Jacobson threw a game that we should have 5-0,” he said. “We made too many mistakes behind him and it’s time to look in the mirror.”

OCEAN SHORES — North Beach was hoping to stay in postseason contention with a doubleheader sweep but still found a way to end the season on a high note with a split against South Bend.

North Beach lost the first game 29-8 and bounced back to win the night cap 12-6.

South Bend got on base and took advantage of walks the Hyaks issued and exploded for 11 runs in the first to put the game out of reach early on.

In the second game, North Beach did a better job of keeping South Bend’s bats quiet. A promising performance from eighth grader Sam Teauge and some big hits from Bradley Biggs helped the Hyaks grab the win in the last game of the season.

North Beach coach David Hinchen said he wished he had more time to work with his players who were just starting to get comfortable with the game.

“On one side you’re excited for the boys who played their best game of the year. It’s rewarding and disheartening all at the same time. It’s a quick season and you don’t have a lot of time to figure stuff out. We’re young and we’ll have a lot of kids coming back,” he said.
