After losing first set, Bobcats rally to defeat crosstown rivals

Aberdeen 3, Hoquiam 1

After dropping the first set and falling behind in the second, the Aberdeen Bobcats rallied behind a 10-point service streak from Ally Troseth to win three-straight sets and earn the victory over visiting Hoquiam on Tuesday.

Hoquaim (2-4 overall) took the first set 25-18 and had a lead in the second frame before Troseth’s service got the Bobcats on track. Her point streak included four aces.

Aberdeen (1-3), which entered the contest winless in its first three games, rallied to win the second set, 25-23.

From that point on, it was all Aberdeen as the Bobcats claimed the next two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-19 to claim the 3-1 victory.

“There was a great crowd. It was the rivalry game and so I am really proud of how the girls fought back after losing game one and didn’t get overwhelmed by the moment,” Aberdeen head coach Doug Basler said. “They really turned it around the energy around the rest of the way.”

Aberdeen was led by Kennedy Pruett and Hailee Baretich, who had 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Jaylyn McDaniel had 31 assists for the Bobcats.

“(Aberdeen) literally just outplayed us,” Grizzlies head coach Heather Bozich admitted. “All the credit goes to them.”

Hoquiam was led by ReyLynn Dunn’s 18 digs and Kacey Pelan’s 15 assists. Rylee Vonhof had six blocks for the Grizzlies.

After two tough losses in a row to Ocosta on Thursday and Aberdeen, Bozich said the plan to get Hoquiam back in the win column is a straight-forward one.

“It’s back to the grindstone tomorrow. That’s where you get better is at practice,” she said.

Montesano 3, Centralia 0

Janessa Otterstetter ended the night with 18 assists in Montesano’s 3-0 win over Centralia at Montesano High School. on Tuesday.

Monte won the match 25-21, 25-18 and 25-12.

The Bulldogs opened up a five-point lead in the first game only to have the Tigers come back and tie the game at 19.

Monte (3-3) then scored six out of the next eight points to win the set in what was their closest call of the match.

“They’re learning to keep their confidence up and reset instead of focusing on their mistakes,” Montesano head coach Renee Volz said. “They’re learning how to move forward so they can push all the way through to the end.”

The Bulldogs capped off the match by scoring 10 straight points in third set.

Ocosta 3, South Bend 1

The Ocosta Wildcats ran their record to a perfect 5-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over South Bend on Tuesday at Ocosta High School.

The two teams split the first two sets, with the Wildcats winning the first set 25-22 and the Indians taking set two, 25-23.

But Ocosta took the final two frames — 25-22 and 25-11 — to record its fifth victory of the season.

Kylee Poirier was a perfect 22-for-22 from the service stripe and led the Wildcats with 14 blocks.

Ocosta also received contributions from Kaylee Barnum (18 kills), Emily Snider (21 assists), and Evalyn Marsh (13 digs), all of whom were also perfect from the service line.

South Bend (2-4) was led by Karley Reidinger, who had 14 kills and went 15-of-16 in serves, and Jessica Sanchez, who had a team-high 19 kills and was 11-for-12 in service.

“We struggled to set up the offense. We didn’t communicate on the court as well as we normally do, and in a game like this, that’s crucial,” South Bend head coach Kelsey Staats said. “Even though it’s tough to walk away with a loss, We did so many great things tonight and we have a lot to be proud of.”

Raymond 3, Willapa Valley 2

The Raymond Seagulls got big games from freshman setter Sidney Swogger and senior libero Kennis Harland en route to a 3-2 non-league victory over Willapa Valley on Tuesday at Raymond High School.

Raymond (2-2) took the first two sets in extended fashion, 26-24 and 30-28, before the Vikings stormed back to take sets three and four by scores of 25-21 and 25-19, respectively.

But the Seagulls left no doubt in the fifth and final set, winning 15-4 to take the match.

Swogger tallied 20 assists while Harland recorded 26 digs to lead Raymond.

Sadie Warnstadt added eight kills and 13 digs for Raymond.

“We’re really young and inexperienced so I was really proud how they kept their mental composure,” Raymond head coach Bob Swogger said of his team’s resolve. “We kind of deflated a little but but we got ourselves back up and going.”

Willapa Valley (1-3) was led by Olivia Betrozoff’s four kills and Kaitlyn McGough and Raina Jones, who had 38 and 47 set attempts, respectively.

“We would get up on them, but just couldn’t finish,” Vikings head coach Karisa Hodel said. “We also made too many mistakes.”

Hodel added that libero Kadie Adkins was “all over the backcourt.”

North Beach 3, Taholah 0

The North Beach Hyaks defeated the Taholah Chitwins in straight sets on Tuesday at North Beach High School.

Freshman setter Mady Eang had a tremendous game for North Beach, notching 50 assists for a Hyaks team that won 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23.

“I’m so excited to have her,” North Beach head coach Sharayah Miller said of her freshman phenom. “She’s a force to be reckoned with.”

Skye Bartell had 15 digs while Lorin Cox recorded 11 kills for North Beach. Both were also perfect from the service line, Bartell going 13-for-13 with four aces while Cox went 14-for-14 in service.

North Beach is now 2-1 on the season with the victory.

Lake Quinault lost to Clallam Bay in four sets on Tuesday at Lake Quinault High School.

After taking the first set, 25-23, the Elks dropped the final three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-20.

Hoquiam 164, Elma 215

The Hoquiam Grizzlies got a low round score of 37 from Josh Burgher en route to a 164-215 victory over Elma on Tuesday at Oaksridge Golf Course.

“It was our first away match and it reflects that we still have some work to do on road courses,” Hoquiam head coach Larry Dublanko said. “We’re pleased with Josh’s score. He had some ups and some downs but nonetheless ended the round with the low score of the day.”

In addition to Burgher’s 37, Hoquiam (5-0) benefited from Brayden Dayton’s 41 and identical scores of 43 from Michael Jump and Tayte Witherbee.

Elma (3-1) was led by Killian Acuff’s 48. Jared Moline (50), Seth Lafontaine (58) and Zeke Mueller (59) rounded out the scoring for the Eagles.

Aberdeen 236, WF West 255

Tye Williamson shot a 42 to win the medalist of the meet for the first time in his prep career as the Aberdeen Bobcats defeated WF West by 19 strokes on Tuesday at Grays Harbor Country Club.

Jaxson Larson (44), Nolan King (48), Evan Waara (50) and Nick Farrer (51) rounded out the Bobcats’ scoring.

“Our goal is to have all the varsity players shooting in the 40s. We were so close this match,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “We seem to be getting more comfortable playing at home. Jaxson and Tye were both inches away from having holes-in-one on the par three seventh hole. Both were sitting on the lip of the cup.

“This is Tye’s very first time being the medalist of the match. Along with having a near miss at a hole in one, he chipped one in from off the green on hole two. He was loving golf today.”

Aberdeen is now 2-3 this season with the win.

Montesano 5, Centralia 0

Two goals from Zoee Lisherness book-ended a dominant performance as Montesano defeated Centralia 5-0 at Jack Rottle Field on Tuesday.

Lisherness opened up the scoring in the fifth minute when her shot from inside the box to the right of the goal keeper found the back of the net.

Brooke Streeter and Anna Ayers scored in the 16th and 17th minute, respectively, to quickly put Monte up 3-0 midway through the first half.

“They did a great job of maintaining possession and finding space and finding the most open player,” Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez said of his team’s play. “We had a really good attack going forward and we tested the other goal keeper early.”

Jaiden Morrison got on the score sheet by putting away a rebound and Lisherness got the final tally in the 50th minute that allowed the Bulldogs to get some of their regular starters some early rest.

Hoquiam 1, Castle Rock 0

Hoquiam’s Sadie Carlyle scored off a through pass from Maya Jump in the fifth minute and the Grizzlies defense made the lead stick as they defeated Castle Rock, 1-0, on Tuesday at Castle Rock High School.

According to Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann, the game was a close, hard-fought contest on both sides of the ball.

“We both had some close chances throughout the rest of the match but couldn’t manage to finish any of them,” he said. “It was a back-and-forth match, even possession, even shots on target. We just were lucky enough to finish an opportunity early on.”

The game was a rematch of a contest played a week before, where the Grizzlies downed the Rockets, 3-1.

Hoquiam moves to 4-1-1 on the season with the win.

Elma 3, WF West 3

Kayli Johnson scored two goals as the Elma Eagles played WF West to a 3-3 tie on Tuesday in Elma.

Johnson scored in the ninth minute off an assist from Brooke Sutherby to give Elma the early lead.

WF West then responded with two consecutive first-half goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

But after the break, Elma, who had several players missing due to illness, tied the game when Jillian Bieker sent a cross into the box that bounced off a WF West player and into the net for an own goal. Bieker receved credit for the goal in the 45th minute.

Johnson then gave Elma (4-2-1) a lead with her second goal of the game, this time off an assist from Molly Johnston, in the 76th minute.

But the lead was short lived, as WF West scored two minutes later off an indirect free kick from 32-yards out that went off the hand of leaping Elma goalie Holli Ray and just under the crossbar to tie the game at 3-3.

“We had to move some players around tonight, which got the girls out of their comfort zone a little bit,” Elma head coach Scott Rockey said before looking ahead to their next contest against King’s Way Christian on Thursday. “Everything should be nailed down and solid by then.”
