Prep Football Roundup: Montesano, Elma and Ocosta all earn blowout victories in Week 2

All three move to 2-0 and score a combined 142 points in convincing wins

The Montesano Bulldogs, Elma Eagles and Ocosta Wildcats each won in dominant, convincing fashion as we take a quick look at Week 2 high school football games for Twin Harbors schools.

Montesano 51, Shelton 6

The Montesano Bulldogs continued a trend of beating teams in higher divisions when they defeated the Shelton Highclimbers, 51-6, on Friday at Montesano High School.

Monte (2-0 overall) got on the board with just under nine minutes left in the first quarter on a short touchdown run by Brent Hollatz.

The Bulldogs then went into their bag of tricks in the second quarter when quarterback Shaydon Farmer completed a pass to Sam Winter who then pitched it to Teegan Zillyett on a hook-and-ladder play for a touchdown and a 15-0 lead at the 6:13 mark of the second quarter.

With just over a minute remaining until halftime, Farmer and Winter connected again, this time on a 32-yard scoring strike to take a 22-0 lead into the break.

Outside of a 64-yard TD run from Shelton running back Josiah Olels in the third quarter, the second half belonged to the Bulldogs. Monte scored on a TD pass from Farmer to Trace Ridgway, a safety and a 15-yard run from Zillyett to take a commanding 38-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A Farmer TD pass to Jordan King and a short scoring run from Cooper Johanson in the fourth quarter rounded out the scoring at 51-6.

“All-in-all, it was a good game,” said Montesano head coach Terry Jensen, who’s team had a balanced attack with 230 yards rushing and 208 yards through the air.

Jensen was quick to highlight the effort of his defense, which has held its opponent to under 10 points for the second straight week to open the season.

“I thought we played outstanding, defensively, for the entire game,” he said, noting Kai Olson, Farmer, King, Ridgway and Hollatz all played well for the Bulldogs defense.

Rochester 12, Elma 41

The Elma Eagles amassed 424 rushing yards en route to a 41-12 victory over Rochester on Friday in Elma. Taitum Brumfield, last week’s winner of The Daily World’s ‘Game Ball’ on offense, carried the ball 24 times for 156 yards and four TDs for the Eagles (2-0).

Brumfield ran for first-quarter touchdowns of 12 and six yards, respectively, to give Elma a 13-0 lead.

Rochester got on the board early in the second quarter when a Brumfield fumble was scooped up by a Rochester defender and returned for a touchdown.

After that it was all Eagles, as quarterback Cody Vollan scored on a 3-yard scoring run then followed that up with a 41-yard touchdown pass to receiver Carter Jacobson to go up 27-6.

Rochester responded with a touchdown just before halftime to make it a 27-12 game entering the break, but a Vollan TD run of 33 yards early in the third quarter gave Elma a comfortable 34-12.

Brumfield put the icing on the proverbial cake with a 1-yard scoring run midway through the fourth quarter to seal the victory at 41-12.

Elma’s ground attack punished Rochester, outgaining the Warriors 424-64 and controlling the clock with a 29:45 to 18:15 time of possession advantage.

Ocosta 50, Chief Leschi 8

Ocosta running back Kobe Beck ran for 182 yards and 3 TDs as the Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the season with a resounding 50-8 victory over Chief Leschi on Friday at Ocosta High School.

“Our O-line opened up holes for Kobe Beck all night,” Ocosta head coach Chris Raffelson said. “They push the five-man sled 200 yards per day along with flipping tractor tires. They are in great shape and well conditioned.”

Jayden Matthews caught an 11-yard TD pass from Cole Hatton in the game and linebacker Tucker Deranleau led the Wildcats defense with seven tackles and three sacks.

Ocosta led 37-0 at halftime and had a running clock for much of the second half.

Morton-White Pass 28, Raymond 20

For the second week in a row, a valiant Raymond comeback attempt fell short as the Seagulls fell to Morton-White Pass, 28-20, on Friday.

A 6-6 tie after the first quarter, Raymond (0-2) fell behind by 22 points after MWP scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter.

McCartney Maden hauled in an 11-yard touchdown reception just before halftime to get Raymond back in the game at 28-12.

After allowing 250 yards in the first half, Raymond’s defense shut down MWP over the final 24 minutes, keeping MWP from scoring further while giving up a mere 84 yards.

The Seagulls defense also gave its offense a chance to pull off a come-from-behind win by forcing three turnovers in the fourth quarter.

A Patrick Edwards 1-yard plunge brought the Seagulls to within one score, but Raymond was unable to complete the comeback attempt and fell by the score of 28-20.

Edwards carried the ball 28 times for 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Maden ran the ball 13 times for 112 yards and a touchdown for Raymond.

South Bend 32, Winlock 14

A balanced South Bend offensive attack accounted for 407 total yards — 201 through the air and 206 on the ground — as the Indians stretched their lead to 16-0 after second quarter touchdowns from Hunter Clements (on a 16-yard pass from Drew Rose) and Chase Flynn (1-yard run).

Winlock’s Bryce Cline scored on a 1-yard run to cut the lead South Bend lead to 16-8 going into halftime.

South Bend (1-1) took a 24-8 lead when Rose hit Flynn on a 23-yard touchdown pass early in the second half.

After a Cardinals score put the game at 24-14 entering the fourth quarter, Rose scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to give South Bend a 32-14 victory.
