Prep Football Roundup: Four local teams still undefeated

Monte, Elma, Hoquiam and Ocosta all move to 4-0 with wins

A total of four Twin Harbors area high school football teams remain undefeated on the season, three in the 1A Evergreen league, as we take a look at all the high school football action from Friday.

Elma 47, Castle Rock 21

Elma quarterback Cody Vollan made big plays with both his legs and his arm as the Eagles soared past the Rockets, 47-21, Friday night at Davis Field.

After the Rockets scored on their first drive, Elma’s offense found some rhythm on their second drive as the Eagles (4-0) took the ball downfield and capped things off with a 12-yard touchdown run from Carter Jacobson to tie the game with 7:14 left in the first quarter.

Vollan got in on the act himself on the following possession when he scrambled 20 yards for a touchdown with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter to give his team a 14-7 lead. He ended the game with 188 yards through the air and two passing touchdowns and 94 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Elma running back Taitum Brumfield also gave Castle Rock trouble as he went for 157 rushing yards on 27 carries and a TD.

Vollan showed off his arm strength with under two minutes to go in the first half and hit Carter Jacobson with a pass about 30 yards downfield. After initially bobbling the rain-dampened ball, Jacobson secured the pass and ran another 30 yards after the catch for a touchdown to extend Elma’s lead to 34-7.

Elma head coach Ron Clark was glad his team was tested by Castle Rock’s two first-half touchdowns.

“Quite frankly, that had to happen. I should kiss the Castle Rock coaches for doing that,” he said. “We needed to get punched in the face. Every game (this season) we go out there and stop (our opponents) and then score, but that’s not football. Someone has to fight back.”

Montesano 48, Port Angeles 21

The Bulldogs used a 42-point first half en route to a 48-21 road victory over Port Angeles on Friday.

After scoring a season-low 24 points in its win over Columbia-White Salmon a week earlier, Montesano (4-0) nearly scored that many points in the first quarter against Port Angeles (1-3).

Just over a minute gone in the game, Monte quarterback Shaydon Farmer got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run.

After letting his legs do the talking, Farmer’s arm began to make noise. The senior signal-caller hit receiver Sam Winter for Monte’s next two scores — one a 29-yard touchdown pass at the 8:05 mark followed by a 10-yard TD toss with 2:12 left in the first quarter — giving the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead.

Port Angeles responded with a touchdown early in the second frame but the Roughriders defense had no answers for an effective and efficient Monte offense. The Bulldogs would score two touchdowns within a minute of each other in the second quarter — a 2-yard TD run by Brent Hollatz at 9:40 followed by an 11-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery by Winter at 8:32 — to take a 35-7 lead. Hollatz would cap off Monte’s highest-scoring half of the season with a 2-yard TD run with just over five minutes left until halftime.

A 58-yard touchdown run from Teegan Zillyett with 5:34 to go in the third quarter, completed Monte’s high-scoring evening.

Monte rushed for 264 yards as a team, led by Zillyett, who carried the ball 14 times for 140 yards.

Farmer finished the game going 6-for-11 for 77 yards and two TD passes and an interception.

The Bulldogs recovered four fumbles in the game and were led in tackles by Jordan King, who had 11 total for the game.

Hoquiam 28, Columbia-White Salmon 20

In a game where he completed 20 passes for 376 yards, Hoquiam quarterback Payton Quintanilla’s final throw of the evening was by far his most significant.

Quintanilla hit tight end Kyle Larsen in the endzone with five seconds remaining in the game to give the Grizzlies a rousing 28-20 victory over host Columbia-White Salmon on Friday.

In what will be its longest road trip of the regular season (four-plus hours) the Grizzlies dug themselves a hole in the first quarter after falling behind 13-0.

“We had some knucklehead penalties that helped them keep momentum and keep the ball moving,” Hoquiam head coach Jeremy McMillan said.

But the Grizzlies clawed back, scoring a touchdown in the second quarter to cut the lead to 13-7 and then taking a one-point lead early in the third when Quintanilla hit senior receiver Jonah Doll with a 72-yard touchdown pass.

Hoquiam (4-0 overall) extended the lead to 20-13 when Matt Brown carried the ball eight yards for a touchdown with approximately six minutes left in the third quarter.

The Bruins (3-2) then tied the game with a touchdown with a minute-and-a-half to go in the third frame.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies defense, which was led by Brady Cummings’ 12 solo tackles on the night, pinned the Bruins back deep in their own territory and subsequently forced them to punt from their own endzone.

Hoquiam’s Rayyon Dayton returned the ensuing punt to the Bruins 35-yard line to give the Grizzlies excellent field position with less than two minutes to go in the game.

After a big third-down conversion pass connection between Quintanilla and receiver Jackson Folkers, Quintanilla found Larsen on a corner route for a 12-yard touchdown pass with five seconds remaining. Brown ran in the two-point conversion to give the Grizzlies the 28-20 victory.

“It was situational football,” McMillan said of the final drive. “For us to get the ball back with all three timeouts and great field position, that was kind of the icing on it right there.”

Quintanilla went 20-for-32 for 376 yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

Folkers was his main target, catching six passes for 69 yards and converting on several critical third downs.

In addition to his big punt return that set up the game-winning drive, Dayton had two sacks and four tackles on defense.

For a team and coaching staff that, according to McMillan, preached ‘grit’ as its theme in the week of practice leading up to Friday’s game, earning a well-fought victory so far away from home shows character.

“We knew we were going to have to grit it out,” McMillan said. “I’m proud of the kids for being disciplined on that final drive and showing grit on the road.”

Kelso 36, Aberdeen 14

Though it was likely their best performance of the season, the Aberdeen Bobcats still ended up on the wrong side of a loss as they fell to Kelso, 36-14, on Friday at Stewart Field.

It didn’t take long for Hilanders (3-0) to get on the scoreboard, as quarterback Marshall Coleman scored on a 34-yard run on Kelso’s second play from scrimmage to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Kelso running back Josh Webb then scored on a 73-yard run on the first play of the Highlanders’ second possession, giving Kelso its second touchdown in its first three plays.

Aberdeen (0-4) got back in the game late in the first quarter, when a bad snap floated over Coleman’s head. Rather than falling on the football, Coleman tried to scoop it up, but Aberdeen’s Enrique Edmonson beat him to it and scored on the fumble recovery to cut Kelso’s lead in half at 14-7.

The Bobcats’ defense then stepped it up, shutting out Kelso the remainder of the half.

Aberdeen’s offense struggled to get anything going as the Kelso defense recorded 11 sacks against Bobcats quarterback Ben Dublanko, who was chased and harassed by the Hilanders defensive front the entire night.

Early in the third quarter, Kelso was able to extend its lead after an Aberdeen fumble deep in Bobcats territory gave Kelso a 1st-and-goal situation from the 3-yard line. Coleman’s QB sneak two plays later gave Kelso a 21-7 lead.

Down 36-7 late in the fourth quarter, Dublanko scored on a touchdown run with 2:08 remaining to complete the scoring at 36-14.

Webb ran for 221 yards on 22 carries while Coleman ran 10 times for 97 yards and three scores.

Raymond 64, Chief Leschi 16

After three hard luck losses to start the season, the Raymond Seagulls got one in the win column with a 64-16 drubbing over Chief Leschi on Friday in Puyallup.

Raymond running back Patrick Edwards returned from a wrist injury that kept him sidelined last week by making an immediate impact on the game. Edwards scored on a 10-yard run, recorded a safety, then scored on a 2-yard plunge to give Raymond a 16-0 lead at 5:27 of the first quarter.

McCartney Maden then scored on a 71-yard run to give Raymond the 23-0 lead with 3:37 left to go in the first quarter.

After a Warriors touchdown late in the frame, Edwards and Maden were at it again in the second quarter, with Edwards sandwiching two more scoring runs around a 35-yard touchdown scamper from Maden.

Raymond led 43-8 at halftime.

Edwards finished the evening with 13 carries, 114 yards and four touchdowns.

Maden had 110 yards on just four carries (27.5 yards per carry) and two TDs. He also caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Raymond quarterback Jack Jordan.

Seagulls running back Joseph Villalpondo had a triple-digit rushing game, finishing with 121 yards and a TD on eight carries.

Cole Hatton also had two rushing touchdowns and passed for 165 yards in the victory.

As a team, the Wildcats racked up 388 total yards of offense.

Ocosta’s defense was led by Christian Taylor, who had two interceptions on the evening, and Gerrick Sweet and Brandon Thomas, each of whom had six tackles.

Hyaks quarterback Marcus Pope ran for 87 yards on 20 carries.

Korrey Housel had a 48-yard TD run for North Beach, which totalled 256 yards as a team.

With the win, Ocosta moves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play.

Onalaska 52, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 14

The Titans dropped to 2-2 on the season after falling to an undefeated Onalaska team, 52-14, on Friday in Onalaska.

PWV’s scoring came from the arm of quarterback Logan Walker, who hit Sam Western for a 27-yard TD pass just before halftime and a 16-yard touchdown toss to Max Smith with 2:11 to go in the third quarter.

But PWV had trouble moving the football against a stingy Onalaska defense that held the Titans to 28 rushing yards on 26 carries, including several tackles for losses.

Onalaska, on the other hand, moved the ball at will against PWV, racking up 485 rushing yards on 56 carries as a team.

“They just ran over us and there wasn’t a darn thing we could do about it,” PWV assistant coach John Peterson said.

Walker finished the game going 9-for-16 for 84 yards and two TDs.

Smith led the Titans on the ground, picking up 51 yards on 11 carries. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one for the PWV defense.

Kiah Carter had 12 tackles for PWV and Luke Gerow also recorded double-digit tackles for the Titans with 10.

Ilwaco 35, South Bend 16

On a night where they accumulated more yards than their opponent, five turnovers stalled the Indians offense in their 35-16 loss to Ilwaco on Friday.

The Indians (1-3, 0-2 Pacific 2B Coastal) got the scoring started with a safety in the first quarter but the Fishermen fought back, scoring 22-straight points before quarterback Drew Rose’s two-yard touchdown down run brought the score to 22-10 early in the fourth quarter.

Rose went 8-for-17 for 119 yards and one interception on a rainy night in South Bend. He also rushed for 73 to account for 192 of of the team’s 250 total yards.

Ilwaco (3-1, 2-0) had 244 yards of offense in the game.

The Indians made the contest close with a an 85-yard kick off return from Seth Hall in the final quarter, but Ilwaco got two key touchdowns on the ground later in the frame to put the game out of reach.
