Prep Football Roundup: Hoquiam shows no signs of slowing up in rout of Castle Rock

UPDATE: Added information on Ocosta victory over La Conner

Hoquiam and Elma both pick up season-opening wins while Ocosta was the only Pacific League team to earn a victory in Week 1 of the prep football season.

Hoquiam 48, Castle Rock 12

If the first game of the season is any indication, the Hoquiam Grizzlies won’t miss a beat.

A team entering the season with many question marks after graduating a league MVP starting quarterback and first team, All-State defensive back, the Grizzlies scored 28 points in the third quarter en route to a 48-12 rout over Castle Rock on Friday at Olympic Stadium.

“We’re reloading with a bunch of juniors and some returning seniors, so we had a few questions marks all over.” Hoquiam head coach Jeremy McMillan said. “But I think the kids have done a fantastic job of filling in and the coaching staff has been great at getting the kids ready for where they need to be.”

Hoquiam led 7-0 after a short touchdown run by Matt Brown early in the first quarter.

The Grizzlies added on to the lead when Brown, playing out of a “Wildcat” style formation, hit receiver Cameron Bumstead down the left sideline for a 36-yard touchdown pass, giving Hoquiam a 14-0 lead heading into the half.

Hoquiam (1-0 overall) blew the game open in the third quarter, scoring 28 points in the frame to ground the Rockets (0-1). Hoquiam quarterback Dane McMillan hit Bumstead for a 43-yard TD strike followed by a scoring throw to tight end Kyle Larsen for 20 yards.

The Grizzlies would go up 33-0 when McMillan completed a pass to Brown, who then pitched the ball to a streaking Bumstead for a 50-yard score affectionately dubbed a “tractor-trailer play.”

McMillan tossed his third touchdown of the night when he completed a pass to receiver Ben Estes for a 37-yard score.

McMillan ended the evening an efficient 18-for-20 for 203 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

In addition to scoring three touchdowns, Bumstead also picked off Castle Rock quarterback Chance Naugle twice.

As dominant as the score indicates, Hoquiam was not without its share of mishaps as several first-half penalties thwarted offensive drives and kept the Rockets within striking distance. But the Grizzlies defense, aided by a 1st-and-goal goal line stand, kept the Rockets scoreless in the first half.

“Defensively, we had a goal line stand and a stop on a two-point conversion and that’s good stuff, especially early in the season,” Coach McMillan said before turning his attention to the coming week. “We’ve got some really good things on tape to work on and focus and improve and do the same thing next week.”

Hoquiam hosts Aberdeen in the long-standing Myrtle Street Rivalry game at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Elma running back Isaiah O’Farrill rushed for a team-leading 114 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles downed the King’s Way Christian Knights 34-8 on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.

O’Farrill scored on runs of three, six and 25 yards to lead an Eagles ground attack that racked up 244 yards to just 13 for KWC.

Elma’s defense held the Knights to just 130 yards of total offense, but Eagles head coach Ron Clark said his team should have put up more points on the board.

“Our defense did very well, but our offense struggled the whole night,” he said. “It was first-game jitters. We weren’t crisp at all and dropped a lot of balls.”

Elma quarterback Cody Vollan completed 4-of-15 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Clark added he thought O’Farrill and fellow running back Brady Shriver (11 carries, 59 yards) both played well.

“Our runners tried to run hard, they just didn’t have a whole lot of holes to go through,” Clark said before remarking about his team’s ability to work through the struggles. “We hustled to the ball and nobody cramped up tonight. There were a lot of positives.”

Shriver also scored on a 37-yard TD run to put the Eagles up 19-2 early in the third quarter.

Elma faces Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday at Rochester High School.

Ten seconds after falling behind 14-0 after Mountaineers receiver Bordy Klein scored on a 21-yard pass play, a Raymond fumble was picked up by Sean Mahaffey and run back 31 yards for a touchdown, making it a 20-0 game at the end of the first quarter.

Rainier scored three more times in the second quarter, highlighted by a 55-yard TD run by Jacob Uch.

Raymond running back Joseph Villalpando provided the Seagulls with a bright spot on a dim night, scoring twice on runs of one and 29 yards in the second half.

Raymond head coach Luke Abbott stated his team has much to work on heading into next week’s practice.

“Tonight was a rough one for us. Especially the first half. We struggled to move the ball offensively and defensively we were not playing physical, not communicating and not tackling as a team,” Abbott said. “We made a lot of first game mistakes. We fortunately turned some things around in the second half and we have some things to build on. We will be getting a few players back this coming week which will help out in regards of depth. We got a lot to work on.”

Adna’s Braden Thomas was too much for the Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans to handle on Friday. The Pirates’ senior quarterback ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Pirated defeated the Titans 33-6 on Friday in Menlo.

Thomas scored on TD runs of 32 and 39 yards in the first quarter and followed that up with touchdown passes of 52 and 35 yards to give Adna (1-0) a 26-0 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Down 33-0 after a Zach Berg 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, PWV (0-1) avoided the shutout when quarterback Logan Walker threw a 23-yard TD pass to Kollin Jurek, making it a 33-6 final.

“The two things you have to do really well is block and tackle,” PWV assistant coach John Peterson said. “And we did a poor job at both of those. We got outplayed tonight.”

PWV managed just 79 yards rushing in the contest, most of those by running back Peter Hamilton, who carried the ball 13 times for 61 yards.

By contrast, Adna rushed for 220 yards on 38 carries and had 11 first downs to PWV’s seven.

“They made us play poorly and hats off to them,” Peterson said of the Pirates. “(The loss) is disappointing, but we got a real look at what we need to work on and we’ll attack those on Monday. … We have a lot of work to do but we have good kids and I know they’ll work really hard and come back from this.”
