NAPAVINE — Bolstered by a 28-point second quarter, reigning state champion Napavine thumped South Bend in the District IV Class 2B football crossover playoffs Friday at Napavine.

South Bend threatened early when Ben Byington reeled off a 60-yard non-scoring run in the first quarter. But that possession ended when Raul Mora narrowly missed a field-goal attempt.

The talented Tigers then took command in the second period to grab a 40-0 halftime lead.

“It just felt like we were overmatched,” South Bend coach Shane Byington said. “They used their speed and kind of spread us out. We had a hard time tackling.”

The Indians scored in the third quarter on quarterback Drew Rose’s 1-yard run.

South Bend completed its season, its best in several years, with a 7-3 record.

“Our kids played hard,” coach Byington said. “They hung in to the end. I’m proud of them.”
