EATONVILLE — Limiting Eatonville to nine first-half points, Montesano opened its boys basketball season by thumping the Cruisers on Friday at Eatonville.

The Bulldogs led 31-9 at the half.

“We were getting hands on some balls, we were switching defenses,” Monte coach Doug Galloway said. “We kind of jumped on them relatively quick tonight.”

Trevor Ridgway paced the Bulldogs with 18 points, eight rebounds and six steals. L.J. Valley added 15 points and seven assists.

The Bulldogs travel to Rochester on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies trailed only 10-9 after one quarter but the Wolves erupted for 49 points in the next two periods.

“We forced some shots in the first half that weren’t really good shots and they were able to dribble-penetrate and get to the basket,” HHS coach Curtis Eccles said. Several Grizzlies encountered foul trouble in the first half.

Victor James scored 15 points and Payton Quintanilla had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who owned a 43-42 rebounding edge.

WESTPORT — Unable to overcome a first-half deficit, Ocosta fell to Ilwaco in a Pacific League contest Friday at Westport.

The Wildcats (0-2, 1-2) mustered only seven points in the opening 11 minutes and trailed by as many as 15 at that stage.

“From that point on, we really outplayed them,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “But when you dig that big of a hole against a team that’s as disciplined as Ilwaco, it’s too hard to overcome.”

Warriors 89, Hyaks 55

PUYALLUP – The athleticism of Chief Leschi was too much for North Beach to handle on Friday.

North Beach’s Steven Sotomish scored 14 points and Rodney Washington and Marcus Pope contributed 12 points apiece. But the Warriors’s fast-paced play created problems on the defensive end as three Chief Leschi players put up double-digit scoring efforts.

North Beach head coach Larry Moore said his team had trouble slowing down Kahea Baker, who ended up with 36 points.

“The biggest thing is that we couldn’t contain Baker, and we gave up too many shots” he said.

North Beach (1-1, 1-2) takes on Willapa Valley at home on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bulldogs 53, Cruisers 31

EATONVILLE — Zoe Hutchings scored 24 points as Montesano trimmed Eatonville in a non-league game Friday.

Hutchings was impressive but so was Monte’s defensive rotations that kept one of Eatonville’s leading scorers from taking over the game. The Bulldogs (2-0) limited Eatonville’s Samantha Swartout, who dropped in 21 points in the last game, to eight.

Monte head coach Julie Graves said she was impressed with the way her team defended Swartout.

“I really like the way we defended tonight,” Graves said. “ Samantha Stanfield, Haylee Perkinson and Zoee Lisherness rotated to play defense on her all night.”

On offense, Monte focused on getting the ball inside to Hutchings who did well finishing at the rim against a team hat was lacking size on the interior. She came away with 10 rebounds as well.

Glory Grubb had six assists while Katie Granstrom added eight rebounds and four assists as well.

The Bulldogs visit Onalaska on Saturday.
