Wildcats 4, Onalaska 0
WESTPORT — Kjirstin Hopfer accounted for all of her team’s scoring as Ocosta blanked Onalaska in a Central League match Monday at Westport.
All four of Hopfer’s goals came in the first half — and all came off assists from Katelynn Denny. She headed in a corner kick in the sixth minute and converted a cross from Denny 15 minutes later. Hopfer took through balls from Denny to score in the 28th and 30th minutes.
The Wildcats (2-1, 3-1) dominated play, outshooting the Loggers 20-5.
Kristi Raffelson made four saves in recording her third shutout of the season. Ocosta coach Mike King cited the passing of Alyssa Goodman in her first game at midfield and the defense of Mercedes Denny, Abriana Ness, Kianna Battiste and Ryann Raffelson.
Ocosta visits Adna on Wednesday for a key league contest.
Bobcats 0, Hawks 0
Frustrated on numerous scoring chances, Aberdeen settled for a scoreless tie with River Ridge in non-league action Monday at Stewart Field.
The Bobcats (0-2-2) outshot the Hawks, 18-5, but were unable to convert. Their best chance came when Emmy Walsh put one just over the crossbar from 10 yards out after taking a pass from Abbie Bradt in the final five minutes.
“We played very strong defense, but our touch was way off in the final third and it cost us some great chances to score,” Aberdeen coach Larry Fleming observed.
Fleming cited the midfield play of Elizabeth Martinez and Anna Foss. Defenders Nayeli Morris, Taylor Coker, Amiah Leach and Skyler Taylor and goalkeeper Reagan Glanz were also praised.
River Ridge took the JV match, 3-2. Nancy Tobar and Azucena Ceja scored for Aberdeen, with Savannah Hendricks commended for fine play.
The Bobcats open Evergreen 2A Conference play Thursday at Centralia.
VOLLEYBALL
Grizzlies fall in four
VANCOUVER — King’s Way Christian controlled the final two sets to beat Hoquiam, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 25-16, in a non-league contest Monday in Vancouver.
The Grizzlies (3-2) played the well-regarded Knights even for two sets.
“The first two sets, we played great,” Hoquiam coach Heather Bozich said. “Positionally, we did really well. We covered everything and had really strong net play. We’ve had some sickness and injuries that kind of got to the girls at the end.”
Kamini Papp topped the Grizzlies with 12 kills and 20 digs. ReyLynn Dunn and Karlie Krohn chipped in with 19 and 17 digs, respectively. Setter Kacey Pelan contributed 16 assists. Elyse Goulet was cited for net play.
Hoquiam won the JV match in two sets.
The Grizzlies make another trip south Tuesday to face Castle Rock.
BOYS GOLF
Wolves 236, Bobcats 245
Led by Tyler Cassell’s 42, Black Hills edged Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference contest Monday at Grays Harbor Country Club.
Brendan King was low for Aberdeen with a 44. Evan Waara, an Ocosta High student who plays for Aberdeen due to the lack of a golf program at the Westport school, added a 49 and drew the praise of coach Dan Sundstrom.
“We were so close to the win today,” Sundstrom said. “We had lots of players in the sand.”
Aberdeen visits Chehalis on Wednesday.
