Monday Prep Roundup: Raymond beats South Bend

BOYS BASKETBALL

Gulls 53, Indians 29

SOUTH BEND — Devine Souvannavanh scored 21 points as Raymond pulled away from South Bend in a Pacific 2B League contest Monday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Gulls (3-3, 4-4) led by only one at the half, but limited the Indians (0-6, 1-6) to nine points in the second half.

“We struggled with our shooting and had a few defensive breakdowns in the first half,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “In the second half, we tightened up our defense and did a better job of finishing at the rim.”

Souvannavanh barely missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds and three steals. Plagued by foul trouble in the first half, Marcus Anderson scored 10 of his 16 points in the third quarter. He also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Cody Jones had a fine outing for South Bend with nine points, nine rebounds and several blocked shots.

“I thought we did a pretty good job handling their pressure, but we just went cold,” Tribe coach Manuel Rangel said. “We were getting the looks we wanted, we just weren’t getting the ball in the bucket.”

Raymond hosts Ocosta on Wednesday. On Thursday, South Bend is home against powerful Life Christian Academy.

Lions 58, Bulldogs 55

SEASIDE, Ore. —Monte’s boys couldn’t put away Cottage Grove after getting off to a fast start, ultimately falling victim to a fourth-quarter flurry by the Lions on their way to a 58-55 loss in the Seaside Holiday Classic.

The Bulldogs used ball movement to build a sizable lead in the first quarter where they scored 24 point but after lackluster scoring outputs in the second and third quarters, Cottage Grove took advantage and completed the comeback with 23 points in the fourth.

Montesano coach Doug Galloway said lapses with passing and defense opened the door for the opposition.

“We got off to a great start but we stopped moving the ball,” he said. “Cottage Grove got much better shots in the second half,”

Galloway highlighted Evan Bates whom he said played well during all tournament games. Trevor Ridgway led the team with 13 points while Seth Dierkop cleaned up the glass with six rebounds.
