RAYMOND — Marcus Anderson registered a double-double as Raymond earned a berth in the District IV Class 2B Boys Basketball Tournament by topping Kalama in a district play-in game Monday.

In foul trouble most of the way, Anderson finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kaci Phansisay added 13 points and Devine Souvannavanh contributed eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots for the Gulls (9-12).

Entering the double-elimination phase of district, Raymond takes on Napavine at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Chehalis.

The Gulls led 21-19 after a foul-filled first half, then slowly pulled away in a more uptempo second half. Outscored from the field, Raymond sank 17 of 31 free throws.

Raymond reserve Cole Enslow, who had eight rebounds, was also cited by coach Mike Tully for solid defense.

“Now that we’ve got that first district game under our belts, hopefully we can clean some things up and be ready to go,” Tully said.

The Cardinals outscored the Wildcats 29-13 in the opening quarter. The Wildcats (8-13) outscored Winlock the rest of the way but was unable to mount a major challenge.

“We knew going in that the key to beating these guys was handling their press,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “We had a couple of good practices and a good game plan. But it took us four or five minutes into the game to (follow) the game plan and we buried ourselves in a deep hole.”

Cole Hatton scored 21 points and Richard Dueber added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats.

While saluting his seniors, Joe Wardlow and the injured Zach Allton, Quinby noted he has 26 returning players in the program.

“I loved the effort tonight,” the Ocosta coach summarized. “Our kids fought back and played with a lot of heart. We’ve got a lot to look forward to.”
