Hoquiam and Onalaska rained out in third inning

Hoquiam and Onalaska couldn’t complete three full innings of play before rain turned the infield into a muddy mess on Monday.

The game at John Gable Park in Hoquiam was called in the bottom of third with the Grizzlies (3-3, 1-2 Evergreen 1A) up 14-4.

A rescheduled date was not available at the time of this writing.

Hoquiam head coach Keith Reynvaan was disappointed the game couldn’t be completed but was pleased to see improved hitting in the abbreviated contest.

“It was nice to get some baserunners on. It’s been a while,” he said. “We’ve been working hard in the cages, so hopefully we can start hitting the ball. We hit the ball a little better today and it was nice to see.”

Aberdeen 17, Black Hills 3

Aberdeen put the game away by scoring 12 runs in the final three innings to beat Black Hills 17-3 in six innings on Monday in Tumwater.

Aberdeen (5-3 overall, 4-1 Evergreen 2A) got off to a fast start and put up three runs in the top of the first inning before adding two more runs in the third.

This was more than enough run support for Jalyn McDaniel, who surrendered two earned runs in five innings of work before departing for reliever Kacie Powell.

Sierra Hammond and Allye Troseth came up big at the plate, driving in three runs each in the Bobcats’ blowout victory.

“Its really hard to single anybody out because it was a total team effort,” Aberdeen assistant coach Brian Siano said. “It seemed like everybody in the lineup had a hit tonight and did something good.”

Aberdeen also took advantage of some defensive miscues from Black Hills (1-9, 0-6 Evergreen 2A) as the Wolves committed seven errors on the day.

Aberdeen’s next game comes on the road against Tumwater. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

PREP BASEBALL

Montesano 10, Tenino 8

Montesano overcame a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to earn an improbable 10-8 victory over the Tenino Beavers on Monday in Tenino.

Down 7-3 entering its last at-bat, Montesano (10-2 overall, 4-0 Evergreen 1A), which had managed just four hits against Tenino starting pitcher Logan Brewer to that point, equalled that amount in the seventh. The Bulldogs opened the frame with a single by Teegan Zillyett followed by Evan Bates’ walk, chasing Brewer from the bump.

Tenino (3-8, 1-3) turned to Shawn Nicholson to relive Brewer, but the freshman had trouble finding the strike zone, walking three straight Bulldogs to make it a 7-5 ballgame.

After striking out Montesano’s Carter Olson, Nicholson walked Braden Dohrmann, bringing the Bulldogs to within a run at 7-6.

Monte’s Aaron Lano then hit a fielder’s choice groundout as Shaydon Farmer was cut down at home on the play.

Parker Plato then strode to the plate and singled on a 3-1 pitch to center field, scoring Cyrus Parsons to tie the game.

But Monte’s offense wasn’t done yet as Zillyett, hitting for the second time in the inning, followed with a line-drive single to chase Dohrmann and Lano home, giving Monte its first lead of the game at 9-7.

Plato then scored on a passed ball to extend Monte’s lead to 10-7.

The Beavers threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. But Montesano reliever Payson Parker worked out of the jam, allowing just one run on a hit batsman to secure the 10-8 victory.

Montesano head coach Mike Osgood praised his Bulldogs for their persistence against a good pitcher who was on his game.

“Logan Brewer pitched a great game … He kept us from getting comfortable in the box and has us looking at too many third strikes,” Osgood said. “Our guys kept battling and were finally able to put together a big inning.”

Cole Daniels earned the victory for Monte, allowing one hit and no runs in three innings.

“I was really pleased with Cole Daniels’ three innings of relief,” Osgood said. “He kept us in the game and gave us a chance to come back.”

Monte starter Ben Wills took a no decision. Wills allowed six earned runs on five hits over the first three innings of the game.

With the victory, Montesano moves a half-game ahead of idle Hoquiam in the 1A Evergreen League.

The two teams face off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

Hoquiam 7, Forks 1

A strong pitching performance from Kyle Larsen and some early run support was enough for Hoquiam to secure the 7-1 road win at Forks on Monday.

The Grizzlies (8-3, 4-1 Evergreen 1A) got hits up and down the line up against Forks (3-5, 0-3), highlighted by Jackson Folkers, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Larsen nearly pitched a complete game, going 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts to pick up the win.

“We made the routine and spectacular plays on defense behind Kyle Larsen,” Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said. “Offensively, we hit the ball well and ran the bases aggressively. It was a great team win and Larsen threw with confidence and control.”

Hoquiam will take on league-leading Montesano on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

PREP GOLF

Aberdeen 33, Rochester 33

Aberdeen avoided the loss column for the first time this season with a tie in a home match against Rochester at Grays Harbor Country Club on Monday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (0-2-1 overall) were led by Ryder Heikkila, who scored a 17 (Stableford scoring system).

Both teams scored a total of 33. When scores are tied the score of the sixth-place golfer is used as a tiebreaker.

But with Rochester (0-1-1) not getting any points from its sixth-place golfer and Aberdeen only sending five golfers onto the links that day, the match was ruled a draw.

Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said Monday’s result was encouraging.

“Getting this tie is a step in the right direction. This was the first time our new players have ever finished a round at home,” he said. “Our next goal is to score 50 team points.”

Aberdeen will face Hoquiam on Thursday at home at 3:30 p.m.

Rochester (33) — Kyle Miller 11, Alex Anderson 10, Kyra Darnell 7, Alyssa Pontes 3, Rheana Hardy 2, Alyssa Pontes 3, Beige Norton 0

Aberdeen (33) — Heikkila 17, Katie Lewis 6, Mercy Johnson 5, Aliyah Lakner 3, Yareli Aparicio 2
