Local Roundup: Aberdeen’s Ryder Heikkila advances to 2A State Championships

Bobcats’ top golfer claims last qualifying spot of district meet

WASHOUGAL — It’s nerve-wracking to be “on the bubble.”

Aberdeen golfer Ryder Heikkila found out why.

At the 2A District IV Championship meet played at the Orchard Hills Golf Club on Wednesday and Thursday, Heikkila found herself waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more to see if she would be one of the district’s top-20 golfers to make it to the state championships in Richland.

After posting a team-best 107 in Wednesday’s opening round, Heikkila found herself on the outside looking in — 22nd place.

She posted a similar score of 108 in round two for a two-round total of 115. Playing a game that is known to test the nerves, it became ironic that the stressful moments came after her tournament was completed.

“We thought her score was not going to be good enough to get one of the 20 allocations for state,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom admitted. “We were loading up the van to leave when the tournament director told us to stick around because there might be a chance. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride sitting there for the next hour waiting for all the scores to be posted. When it was all tabulated, Ryder was in 20th place. Right after it was posted she said to me, ‘Coach, I am not really a religious person, but I have to tell you that I prayed a little that I would get to go to state.’”

Day 1 Results: MacKayla Waltee, 114 (27th place); Ryder Heikkila; 107 (22nd place), Mercy Johnson, 137; Mailee Touch, 150; Dahlia Zepeda, 149.

Day 2 Results: Ryder Heikkila, 108 (20th place); MacKayla Waltee, 112.

Hoquiam sends four golfers to final day

SPOKANE – The Hoquiam High School boys golf team had a solid day on the links as four golfers made the cut in the first rournd of the 1A State Championship Tournament at the Liberty Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday.

Ryan Cole led the way with a round of 80 followed closely by Josh Burger, who ended up with an 84.

With the cutline set at 88, Tatye Witherby and Dayton Braden just snuck into the final round of the tournament, each carding rounds of 88.

The four surviving Grizzlies golfers are part of a group of 40 that made the cut from an orignal field of 80.

The par-70 course presented some difficult conditions as strong winds effected shots off the tee early in the round.

Hoquiam head coach Larry Dublanko said he was proud of the way his team fought through early adversity to land a spot in the final day of the tournament.

“It was a battle early on as the winds picked up out of the northeast. It caused some havoc with the par-3s because now you’re hitting into the wind, but they fought through it,” he said. “It was an historic day for Hoquiam golfers to have four player in on the final day.”

Hoquiam will tee of at 7 a.m. today with the chance to compete for a state title.
