Las Vegas lines prove that Seahawks can play the underdog role this season

As esteemed Seattle Times columnist Larry Stone wrote earlier this week, the Seahawks are re-embracing an underdog role and something-to-prove mentality as they seek to get back to the playoffs after missing the postseason a year ago for the first time since 2011.

Further proof that tabbing themselves an underdog isn’t just motivational lip service this year, though, arrived Tuesday when a couple of different outlets released betting lines for every single NFL game this season, something often done this time of year now that rosters are predominantly set.

One set of lines from M Resort reveals that the Seahawks are favored in just three games in 2018 while they are underdogs in nine with three others listed as pick ‘ems — there are no lines for the week 17 games due the uncertainty over what teams will have to play for, etc. (HT to Jacson Bevens for the link).

As football numbers analyst Warren Sharp noted, the Seahawks have been favored in 10 or more games every year since 2013 and were favored in 13 or more every season from 2013-16.

But the times have changed with the Seahawks regarded by many observers as in rebuild mode, whether the team wants to call it that or not, NFC West rivals Los Angeles and San Francisco regarded as on the upswing, and the NFC in general regarded as potentially the stronger of the two conferences heading into the 2018 season.

It’s also worth noting, though, that the Seahawks are regarded as a significant underdog in just one game — a week 10 matchup against the Rams in Los Angeles in which the home team is favored by a touchdown.

All of the rest of the lines are no more than 3.5 points, indicating that the oddsmakers still view Seattle as a competitive team, but one without much margin for error — an assessment that given all of the change is hard to argue.
