Hoquiam wins team title at district golf tourney

Third year in a row

Hoquiam’s golf team won the District IV Class 1A title for the third year in a row, while also advancing four players to the state championship tournament in the spring.

Players advancing to state are Josh Burgher, Ryan Cole, Tayte Witherbee and Brayden Dayton.

The Grizzlies took the team title with 68.5 points, followed by Seaton Catholic (60.5 points), Kings Way (42), Montesano (31), Elma (8) and La Center (8).

“I was sure pleased with how our guys persevered through the wet conditions, the tournament atmosphere and pressure, stated Hoquiam coach Larry Dublanko. “They worked hard this year to achieve these results. Josh’s best side was the front. He got himself in some trouble on the back but stayed with it. Ryan played steady with a 41-41. He never really got himself in much trouble. Tayte would come back well after a minor stumble to secure sixth in his first-ever district tournament. Brayden seemed to struggle all day but got help from the field and took advantage of it. We have a happy bunch of boys!”

Playing at at Tumwater Valley Golf Club over two days, Burgher shot 80-86 for a 166 total, Cole shot 86-82 (168), Witherbee scored 88-89 (177) and Dayton 89-97 for a 179.

Other Harbor golfers advancing to the state tournament included Payson Parker of Montesano (85-86-171) and Ben Royer of Montesano, (87-92-179)

Sean Ball of Seton Catholic was the tournament medalist, winning by nine strokes with scores of 77 and 78 for a 155 total.

On Thursday, five Hoquiam players advanced to the final day of the tournament.

Killian Acuff of Elma) finished 14th (92-93-185) and Ben Wills of Montesano was 18th (88-103-191).
