TENINO — Blasting out to a 22-4 lead after one quarter, Hoquiam thumped Tenino in an Evergreen 1A League contest Friday at Tenino.

The Grizzlies (2-3, 5-11) had three starters return from a two-week suspension. Starting post Matt Brown, however, was out due to what HHS coach Curtis Eccles described as “an undisclosed issue.” He is due to return in Hoquiam’s next game.

Payton Quintanilla returned to action with 16 points, while Victor James added 15 points and Rayyon Dayton had 13 points and nine rebounds.

“We were able to pressure them and create turnovers,” Eccles said. “A lot of our points were transition buckets.”

Bryan Morales came off the bench to grab eight rebounds. All nine Grizzlies who suited up scored.

Hoquiam returns home Wednesday to face Elma.

OYEHUT — League-leading Life Christian rallied in the second half to fend off North Beach’s upset bid in a Pacific 2B League game Friday at Oyehut.

Shooting well from the perimeter, the Hyaks owned a 40-29 halftime lead. But Hyak post Ben Poplin, who had scored 13 points until then, was sidelined midway through the third quarter with a knee injury of undetermined severity.

Behind the scoring of freshman Omari Maulana, the Eagles erupted for 46 points in the second half. Maulana finished with 29 points.

“They were in a zone and we were hitting our outside shots,” Hyak coach Larry Moore said of the first-half performance. “They started being a little more aggressive on the offensive boards. When Ben went out, we didn’t have the low-post presence offensively.”

Taholah’s offense struggle to get easy shots in transition but once the defense got comfortble, head coach Karl Braden said his team began to click.

“We clamped the defense on them in the second and third quarter,” he said. “We switched to a man-to- man midway through the third quarter. We stared settling down in the second quarter.”
