Harborites earn tickets to state at district 1B track meet

NASELLE — Twin Harbors athletes won more than a dozen events in the District IV Class 1B Track &Field Championships on Wednesday at Naselle.

Host Naselle swept team honors. With 120 points, the Comet boys finished 49 points ahead of runner-up Washington State Deaf. Wishkah was a distant second to Naselle in the girls team competition.

Wishkah, Taholah and North River will be well-represented at the state 1B meet next weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. The top three in each event advanced.

Wishkah’s Fultz brothers were both among the district champions. Will Fultz won the boys 100 meters in 11.96 and took the 200 with a season-best time of 24.71.

Marty Fultz took the 110 high hurdles in 20.42.

Wishkah’s Duncan Palmgren cleared 10 feet to win the boys pole vault and eighth-grader Kaitlyn Ferry outdueled a pair of Naselle sprinters to win the girls 200 meters with a personal-best 30.84.

“The kids did real well,” Wishkah head coach Bob Eager said. “We had some good efforts. You have some surprises and you always have some disappointments. Overall, we had a very nice day. (Kaitlyn) really poured in on in the 400 and she said ‘I don’t know if I can do the 200,’ but she turns around and wins it.”

North River eighth-grader Ruby Gumaelius was a double winner in the girls 800 (2:52.85) and 1,600 meters (6:23.73).

Her junior teammate Forrest Carbaugh also captured two district titles — in the boys 400 (56.69) and 1,600 (5:02.63). Both marks were personal bests.

Taholah’s Levi Jackson, the reigning state 1B boys javelin champion, captured his specialty with a throw of 153 feet. He also won the shot with a personal-best mark of 40-1.

Chitwhin senior Dylan James edged Will Fultz to win the boys long jump at 17-11 3/4 and tied for first with Mary M. Knight’s Zack Thompson in the high jump at 5-2.

Taholah’s Celisha Ralston threw 96-8 to win the girls discus.

Mary M. Knight also won several events. Sophomore Kaylee Sowle was a four-time victor in the girls 100 meters, high jump, long jump and triple jump.
