Grizzlies strike late to beat Rochester in soccer

The heavy rain that canceled a lot of games around the Harbor didn’t put a damper on Hoquiam’s offensive attack in the second half of its 5-0 non-league soccer win against Rochester on Friday night at Aberdeen’s Stewart Field.

Connor Darras gave Rochester’s backline fits as he notched a hat trick while scoring the last three goals of the game.

Despite the lopsided score, the Grizzlies (6-1) only had 1-0 lead to show for its efforts after 40 minutes of play even though they had controlled possession.

Tigre Falla’s goal was the only score of the match until Carlos Juarez found some room in the box and was barely able to get off a shot before a defender closed on him.

The shot escaped the dive of the keeper, hit the post and had just enough on it to make it over the goal line to bring the score to 2-0.

Assistant coach Carlos Hermenegildo said moving Darras from midfield to froward helped them overwhelm the Warriors in the second half.

“We started the same way we did in the first half but things weren’t working out in the first 10 minutes,” he said. “We decided to switch things by putting Connor Darras as a forward and he was able get in three times. They were moving the ball well and stretching them out.”

Darras’ presence was starting to make the HHS offense look a bit more dangerous but he finally got in on the scoring act when 58th minute when his low show from outside the box beat the keeper.

Darras added two more goals in the 65th and 71st minute on shots from the wing that got over the keeper and under the cross bar.

Darras was the standout and got a well deserved round of applause when he was subbed out in the final minutes but Hermenegildo said the team’s versatility really makes them dangerous.

“We have quite a few players that can play in different positions,” he said. “One of the good things about our team is that anybody can score.”

The Grizzlies will get back to league play on Monday when they hit the road to face Forks.
